Looking for input on transporting new built short block. The new crank, pistons rods and cam are installed at this point. To avoid any contamination what steps should be taken?

The initial thought is to install a clean oil pan to protect crank before shipment. No heads, intake, water pump, timing cover, etc... will be present. Saran wrap the top of the motor before installing a large engine storage bag. A box steel engine cradle will be used, so engine does not roll during transport. As far as the vehicle, hopefully a minivan/Pacifica (assuming cherry picker can clear liftgate as opposed to a open truck bed.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

You might forgo the box if you read below.

Buy two rolls of saran wrap, use it all.

Wrap it in a old thick clean blanket and duct tape the heck out of it.

Put two black trash bags on it, wrap tape.

Sit it on a old 14 inch tire and ratchet strap (2) it to a pallet. Id just use tire if it were my personal vehicle.

Ive had them go freight across country like that.

Ive shipped oem motors and R block based motors frieght that way and never damage or a scratch.

I know your concerned to keep it all nice, but its not a hard task so Id not overthink it.

I just seen no heads, I can muscle a short block alone, two people can do it easily.

If you rest it on its top (china walls) you can even place a 2X12X10 under it and slide it on wood out of your van onto a board or cardboard and hook a hoist to it.

Pretty easy overall.

Condensation can kill you. DAMHIK!

Before I wrapped it I'd cover all machined surfaces with something (not WD40). Things I'd consider are:

Boeshield https://boeshield.com

LPS2 or LPS3 www.lpslabs.com/site_files/tech_downloads/TDS_00216.pdf

Gibbs Lubricant www.gibbsbrandlubricant.com

NLGI #2 grease

There are others, these came to mind first.

I have used Mobil Open Gear Lubricant but it finally came off after years and years.

I have a couple of Mopar Performance plastic engine crates that were used for crate motors. They come with a stand to bolt the engine into, then fasten to the crate. I coat with oil then put plastic around it, then lots of dessicant bags and bolt the two halves together.
