I bought a '78 Fury a couple of months ago. The speedometer was inaccurate and when I went to change the speedo drive gear, I found the housing siliconed into the transmission tail housing, and a big gob of silicone where the cable inserts into the housing. I'd like to fix it correctly.

The dealer can only get the large o-ring that goes around the circumference of the housing. Does anyone know an aftermarket source for the two parts labeled "oil seal" in the FSM? I imagine a generic o-ring would work on the outside, between the cable and the housing, but the inner one might be more of a problem.

Thank you.

try 4883434aa. you can find the kits on ebay. dealer part may be discontinued. also you may find the o-ring for the cable end at any parts store. i think the part number for the small o-ring is 1934822

BTW, you can change the plastic to the older style metal housing. you can use the older style gear that way which the gears are more available. many times the plastic housing gets broke trying to get them out and that may be why there is sealer on it. you would also have to change the speedo cable to the older style.

Thanks Mopars4ever!

There are a couple on eBay that list compatibility from 1966-1976. I thought that 1976 was around the time they switched to the plastic housing. I just wanted to confirm that it would work, and that it wasn't just for the metal housing units.

I already have a large selection of newer-style speedo gears, so that is why I'd probably just stick with the plastic housing.

Of the smaller two seals in the kit I think the green seal is the one that fits the plastic adapter. It has been a while since I messed with it since I have changed my car over to the old style but if you have the old seal out you could compare the number to the one in the pic. I looked in my 77 book and the seals are older part numbers so you should be good to go.

The last time I needed one I walked into a local transmission shop and they gave me one. I forget how much it was but it wasn't much, they might have even handed it over for free.
