Just an FYI for anyone heading into Carlisle on 81 from the "North".

I just saw on the news today that road work is going to start on Monday north of Carlisle on 81... and south of Carlisle on 81 soon after, but likely NOT next week. So expect delays and general miserable PennDot inspired driving on 81 next week... that is, in addition to the usual PA pot hole dodging.

7/12 Update: see note below on possible 83 Northbound work above York PA.

ROFLMAO. Thanks for the heads up. I drive 81 frequently in my travels between CT and Maryland. You forgot to mention the "Pennsy Gators" (truck tire treads) and the large number of stricken deer (poor things)that literally litter the highways.

But I much prefer going thru Pennsylvania than via the GWB / NJ Turnpike / Delaware / Maryland that is my alternate. Much better scenery and nicer rest areas!

Sorry, I wasn't really paying that much attention.
It looked like it wasn't very far north of Carlisle since the map was zoomed in pretty far, and the lower left corner was showing where 81 crosses the turnpike (76). The work zones were a bit north of that approaching the river. 9am to 2pm work times.

Here I found this on the TV stations web page...

Thanks! The areas around Mechanicsburg were just redone, so north of that makes sense.

Based on this it will not impact drivers coming in from the north on Friday or over the weekend;

Quote:
Drivers are advised to use caution as crews will be working on the interstate from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

When I come from Chicago I travel US 30 to north of Columbus then take I-70 to I-68 going through Maryland than north on I-81 to avoid paying tolls and potholes! Takes and hour and a half longer and 50 miles more but well worth it! up

Well that's good... I didn't see exactly what they we doing until I saw the article.

Even so... you never know if quitting at 2pm means both lanes will be back open or not in PA.
Sometimes they put cones out for 5 miles, then cut out giant squares in the road & leave it like that for days. mad
Most screwed up state in the union when it comes to road work. realmad

Thanks for the update .. last year it took me six hours to get there from north jersey, It usually takes two- two and half , due to rain and two separate truck accidents on Friday morning was going to leave at five a.m. I Might have to leave earlier to avoid the construction work window.

Apparently the local news missed the update about road work on 83 just North of York PA that cut the road to one lane, as they completely shut down the Emigsville 83 North-bound on & off ramps and right hand lane of 83 North to dig up the road. mad

If you got caught in that $$!@ign mess today (I did) blame PennDot.
I have no idea if both lanes on 83 will be open tomorrow or not. shruggy

i was surprised to encounter nothing. shruggy i picked up 81 at around the 62 mile marker, and there was nothing to the fairgrounds exit at 52 [south bound]. as i only could make the show friday, when we left [getting rush hour of course !] north bound on 81 was pretty slow for a few miles, but south bound was a real mess, due to something going on with a wide load hauling a giant loader of sorts. there were probably a dozen state trooper cars, plus a bunch of DOT cops. that cluster had traffic backed up, stopped, for at least 5 miles, clear to almost the 61 mile marker where the other road merges with 81 [don't know that rout number]. the merge on ramp was stopped as well. i was pretty happy we were going north !
