Why did Richard Petty switch from the Road Runner to the Charger, mid way in the season in 1972. He had a great year in 1971 with the Road Runner and was doing well with the same car in 1972. I can think of maybe three reasons for the switch.

1) Did the Charger have more frontal downforce?

2) Did the Charger have less forward aero drag?

3) Did he want to get a head start on testing with the Charger for the 1973 season?

You most likely missed the main reason, Dodge offered him more money than Plymouth.

I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!

3 major factors:

Aero, aero, aero.

In 71, PE had a two car team with Buddy Baker in a white/red #11 Dodge Charger.

In 72 Petty started running the Charger with Baker.

In 72 Baker left mid season to K&K.
