I put a GV in my old D350 that I owned before the Cummins came along. IIRC, it was the 18" tailshaft. If he isn't going to do a lot of towing with the LRE, he would be money ahead to build an early 518 and put in his truck. I think 95 and back are the ones that are easy to hook up with the pressure switches to work the OD. Splitting the gears with the Gear Vendor is ok, but when the new wears off of it, it's just another OD. The 518 has a slightly better OD ratio than the GV.

Mike, while you're doing the install....run a bypass wire with connectors on each end. When the computer takes a dump, and it will at some point, you can unplug the wire from the computer and plug in the bypass wire to the on/off switch. That way, you will still have OD if the truck is out on a road trip. When you look at the wiring schematic, you will easily figure it out. I did that on my old D350, and was glad I did. I did the same to a Dodge class C motorhome I bought that already had a GV in it. Needed it in that once too. Hopefully, GV has it worked out by now, but the computers and engagement solenoids are the weak links on a GV. The install is pretty easy, so have fun.
