Looking to purchase a 36 foot travel trailer. Plan on towing with my 07 2500 CTD. Don't want to go with a fifth wheel because I want to keep my canopy. Anyone else tow that much with their truck?

You shouldn't have any trouble with it. Towed a 9k 5th wheel for 10 years behind my '06 2500 4x4. Could barely tell it was back there. wink
Depending on what you buy, you may or may not be towing that much weight. A friend just bought a new TT that was 36' and about 8k empty, IIRC. It had triple slide-outs on it which added to the weight.

Sure it'll do it, will it be comfortable? Not IMO.

5th wheel is the way to go that big and heavy, then your truck will be more comfortable pulling that much trailer. What do you need the bed cap when you have 36' of storage space in your trailer?

You can put tons of stuff in a 36' trailer, so they weight a lot going down the road usually.

I'd pull that with a wagon, but not on the bumper.
Good brakes car and trailer should be no big deal.

Depending on how much "stuff" you load in the camper, the average added to dry weight is usually considered to be about a 1,000 lbs. give or take. Granted, a TT does not tow as well as a 5er simply because all the tongue weight is at the rear of the truck. Add a weight-distributing hitch and maybe a sway control and you can come close. up
One other thing you may or may not need is either air bags or overload springs depending on tongue weight.

I tow a 32' LQ trailer weighing in at 11,400 lbs fully loaded with no issues. regular cab 2500 4x4 5.7 Hemi. You will be just fine... twocents

I tow a 36ft gooseneck that weighs 6900 lbs. Add in a 3500 lb car, 500lb 4 wheeler, 200 lb tool box, a generator and 4 jugs of fuel, extra oil and parts for car. Add in 2 coolers full of beverages and food and then add in a shower and bedding and extra clothes and whatever else to carry me at the track for 3 days. No issue at all with my 2500 QC 4wd.

I know of others towing up to 45ft with living quarters and all the stuff I carry with the same vehicle with no issues. You o NOT need a Freightliner to pull an open trailer as that's a bit over kill - LOL

In my opinion anyway...…….

I just towed my buddies 37' travel trailer with 3 slide outs to his yearly camp ground site for him with my ole 96' Ram 2500 V10. We didn't even hardly know it was back there. I think he said it was 11,100 lbs. I also tow my 28' Haulmark enclosed race car trailer loaded with tools, car, golf cart equipment etc which is also close to the 11,000 lbs mark loaded. You should be just fine with your CTD pulling it.

It will pull it just fine, but get a good weight distributing hitch. 36' TT is way harder to pull than a 5th wheel. My 04 2500 CTD pulled our Sunnybrook 5th wheel with no problems.

36ft tag..... you best add an auxiliary fuel tank. You’re going to hate life looking for a fuel stop.
Guess I’m going to have to search that.... that’s one long bumper pull.

A lot of people travel with their ATV's (Hunters, campers). They'll fit in the truck bed but not in the travel trailer.

OK

But those who say a 36' tag trailer will be OK...has not pulled a 36' tag trailer I am betting. Most if not all that I have seen that big are 5th wheels I believe.

It used to be that 32' enclosed race car trailer was the max size trailer to pull as a tag. And I know of a friend who had 32' tag race car trailer that I raced with and he only used it one season because it was bear to tow. He got a larger goose neck trailer next.

And now the 5th wheel toy haulers are the way to go if you want to do that.

I agree with you there. Those toy haulers are nice.

I agree 36' bumper pull is long...I have a 34' race trailer i pull with an 04.5 4 door dually... weight wise, not a problem length can be a pain. Also pulling it with a single wheel 2016 if not loaded perfectly can be a little hair raising.

Do you know the total loaded weight of this trailer? If so please post it up
I've towed a bunch of different open and enclosed car trailers as well as one 34 Ft. 5th wheel travel trailer, the fifth wheel weighed 11,500 on the dual axles and added right at 1500 Lbs. onto the rear axle of my 4 WHD Ram 3500 single wheel rear end truck and added right at 700 lbs. onto the front axle of my truck also. That equals right at 13,700 total weight of that trailer, it towed really nice up It was more stable in the wind than when I towed my 24 ft. Pace Shadow race car enclosed trailer that weighed 8600 Lbs. on the two trailer axles and added right at 700 Lbs. onto the rear axle weight and removed 300 Lbs. from the front axle on the same truck loaded up with my old Duster ready to race in the same wind work
Is it a two or three axle trailer ?
I probably wouldn't buy that long of a tag travel trailer either way on the amount of axles twocents shruggy

I think you have plenty of truck to handle the weight. We handle that much and more regularly with 24' flat trailer and single wheel gas truck.

The 36' trailer will have lots of windage... in a cross wind the hitch behind the rear axle will want to steer the truck. A good hitch - WD and stabilized - will not help that much.

A tag trailer that long and high would not be my choice behind a PU.
