Looking for some advice from painters that have painted a plastic chrome grill frame. Should the chrome be striped off the grill, and if so whats the best method, or can I just scotch brite it and go from there. Working on a 2003 dodge truck grill.

Thanks!
Dan.

A new black grille and frame from Rockauto is $55

That would be easier than stripping the chrome

Don't be the exception.

The chrome plating sometimes wrinkles up. I suspect you could peel it off if you can cut a small hole on an edge and carefully scrape it all off. Being in direct sunlight will help.
Me? I'd get a new one.

scuff it by hand with 80 grit, epoxy prime it,let it dry then scuff it again with a maroon scotch brite and paint it.

stripping off the chrome works best. if you don't the paint will eventually peel.

the best way without stripping the chrome is lightly etch the chrome with a sandblaster, etch prime, epoxy prime, them paint.

next best is scotch with red scotch brite, etch, epoxy, paint.

when i say etch prime use a 2 part primer. etch in a spray bomb is useless in this situation.
some people say etch primer isn't required because epoxy has etching qualities. yes it does but 2K etch primer will allow the acid to bite in MUCH better than just epoxy ever will. when painting over chrome you want the max adhesion or it will eventually peel no matter what you do.

someone posted about a black grill on the cheap.
in my opinion buying and painting this is probably your best bet

perception is 90% of reality

Thanks everyone. I believe I am going to try and strip it and see what happens. Don't have anything invested, so if I ruin it I'm not out much. Is there a chemical that works well to do this?
