I ended up with a 64 GMC truck I don’t want or need . I have a guy who wants to trade me this engine but he’s a couple of hours away and I’m not sure what type of old Hemi it is , 331,354,392 or other.

I see some raised dimples in the valve covers does this mean anything? It’s in a non titled 55 or 56 dodge truck.

I know the 354 and 392s are more desirable and some 331s have an attached bell housing
I need to know where to have him look to check for numbers to ID it ?

Looks like a Dodge hemi. Likely a 270 if it's a '55 truck. Value isn't huge...

I always figured the ones with the dimples in the valve covers might have had adjustable rocker arms.

The small and oddball Desoto hemi's can be had for well under a grand. Its probably worth more with the truck and vice versa.

To check it you need to look at the numbers on the front valley rail.

I didn't notice the dimpled valve covers; that and the 2-barrel and wide pulley grooves makes it a truck or industrial/marine.
Here's a more complete list of numbers:

several years ago i parted out ax 58 big truck,i think it was a 500 series?,it had a engine that looked like your picture, dimpled valve covers and all,it was a 331 that ran,i sold it for $800 and should have got a lot more, however i sold the bell ,flywheel and clutch separately for the cheap price of $200
edit!,it was a 315 not a 331

Value really depends on what it is. When I had my old 325 my research told me that the value starts at the 392, then the 354, followed by the 325 and 331. The Dodge 315 has some performance value, but everything else is eye candy. There were bigger DeSoto hemis (330 and 341), but there's just about no performance support for them. The "lesser" hemis value depends a lot on who wants it.
