Hey all- my water pump is going out. Just to confirm, the last time it needed changed, the shop had a time getting one (5 tries!). They said it ended up using a 92-up magnum one.
This thing is a crossover year. LA long block, TBI, Magnum motor
mounts, serpentine belt accessory drive (magnum parts, I assume).
So, I need NAPA to order up a 92/ magnum application, NOT a 91/LA , correct?
I don't have anything else currently running, otherwise I'd tear it down and take with me to compare on the counter.
If it takes something else, or anyone has a part number, please chime in, also.
Thanks!

I think to use the magnum pump you have to use the magnum fan clutch and possibly fan. It is a one year (not counting the 1990 shelby)only one truck only as it was not the same as a 1/2 ton. If he already used the magnum pump he probably has the matching fan

If you have the serpentine belt, you need the later (92) water pump. The serpentine belt turns the water pump backwards compared to the old (90) "V" belt drive.
You can tell by looking at how the fan is attached to the water pump. If it has one big nut, it is the serpentine belt and the later pump. If the fan is attached by 4 bolts, it is the "V" belt drive and uses the older pump. Your truck uses one system or the other, there was no "mix", it was a complete change over when the serpentine belt was introduced. Gene

Wrong, I have a 91 dakota with a V8, it is a 1 year 1 aplication deal, it has a serp belt but the fan is not atactched (well it actually is now as I had the same problem getting the right water pimp) with the one big nut like 92+ magnum, also the way all the other accessories are bolted on is one year one aplication as the 91 ram and full size van still used V belts. The oil pan is also 1 year 1 aplication.

Thanks for the info! It's def both a serpentine belt and 4 bolts hold the fan. Dave, do you have a brand/part # for the pump?
Can't beleive this one only lasted 10months and less than 10k miles!

Thanks! I may look into changing to the magnum fan/clutch/pulley. Neighbor has some trucks sitting I might be able to use. Would be far easier than trying to source a 91 only pump.

I've been very impressed with Napa lately.
Is this the right WP?

I would change it over to the 92 up magnum parts if you plan on keeping it. That one year only stuff is a PITA the older they get.

I'm finding that out! Didn't know it was That "one year" when I bought it as a lease return in '94...so yeah, I'm kinda attached to it.
I'd like to restore/fix her back up some day, since it's kinda rare, but for now it's still my driver with 273k and going...
