Does any one know of a reliable supplier for a 1969 style script group 27 red cap Mopar restoration battery?
Thanks! MJ

From what I can tell there is no source for Mopar restoration batteries at this time.
After difficulty getting through to them, I ordered a group 24 from Antique Auto Battery in early March and have yet to see it. They said they were made to order, and took around 8 weeks to fill an order. I've had no updates since, but it doesn't look like they have charged my credit card either at least!
Turbostart posted recently on E-bodies.org they are working on selling Mopar restoration batteries again, but they don't have a firm date as to when they will be available.
They said to watch their Facebook page for updates, but I am not on Facebook.
I'm probably going to gut a dead yellow cap battery I have and install a small battery inside it, as I have lost patience trying to get a battery!

I have heard of these 'toppers' for green & yellow cap batteries before, they fit on some modern batteries.

Decals on the sides of the new battery would have to go though.......

I have a topper on my convertible and like it a lot. One problem is that the standard battery hold down brackets are a bit too narrow for the toppers. Someone helped me modify the bracket to work so I was finally able to use it. I will never go back to a resto battery on this local show and cruise car!
IIRC I read recently the battery topper place isn't doing Mopar ones any more even though they are still shown on their website. In the post I saw that in, someone said they were still able to buy them at Year One though.
My T/A is a show queen so that is why I want to get a resto battery for it. I do have a DOA group 24, so the idea of gutting it and installing a small battery inside is appealing to me more every day!

I also ordered a group 27 battery with yellow caps in Late March from Antique Auto Battery...they did not take my credit card # at the time but said they would contact me when it was ready...well I heard nothing and like others on this web site it appeared that AAB was/had gone out of business. Well low and behold I receive a call about a week ago from the AAB local number and it is a young woman asking me if I still want to take delivery of the battery I ordered back in March...she tells me that AAB has changed hands and is now called “Jim’s Battery”. I agreed to pay for it and only hope I did not just get scammed.

Interesting. I had submitted a inquiry in early March and got an email back right away with a price and shipping. I tried calling but the phone never was answered and my voicemails weren't returned. So I replied to the email asking how to order, and the next day an older sounding lady (who I understand is the widow of the companies founder) took my info and credit card info.
I've never heard anything since. shruggy

I’m in the same area as Antique Auto Battery and waiting for a couple batteries as well. The AAB sign was still on the building and “Jim’s Battery” was on the door.

I’ve been there a few times in person and talked to Jim about my order about a week or so ago. They are a small operation with what looks like minimal help/overhead. My take is that they will get batteries done but will take way longer than expected. I’m probably going to stop there again tomorrow to get status on my order. I’ll report back with how that goes.

I got sick of paying the big dollars for the stock look only to get a two years each out of the last two I bought. I have gutted 3 now & hide a lightweight racing battery inside. Actually even cranks over faster than the repro batteries did and still looks stock from the top. Also goes from like 46 lbs down to about 12 lbs if weight matters to anyone.

I just got an email from them saying Deloris had retired, and they are now called Jim's. They have an older order from me and want to know if I am still interested.

I stopped there yesterday morning and jim was opening up when i pulled in. As I was expecting he moved the date up another week as he was still waiting for one of the cases. I’m about a month in since original order was placed

Please keep us up on this since your local to the supplier.
I'd like to know with Jim running the place now the time from order to delivery. It sounds like he does not keep any inventory on the cases which would cause extra time?
Thanks! MJ

Just called them this morning now that they are up and running and explained to him the battery I received from the previous owners had incorrect red caps. He said the proper ones would be mailed out today, they had a back order on the right ones at the time. I fully expected to hear not my problem but they took care of me! A note with the battery that the proper caps would follow would have been nice but they were retiring and probably didn't care.

I Picked up batteries on Friday. This was a little over a month from initial order. Keep in mind I went in person and paid cash at pick up. One of batteries I received (55 group super stock) has issue with negative lug being loose. So I will be taking that back to have them look at the issue. The second battery I received is good(27 group red cap).

I’ll follow up with what happens with the 55 battery.

I don't see a group 27 battery with red caps listed on their site?
What was the cost for the battery and what type of warranty with the new owner? Thanks for keeping us updated on your purchase!

Interesting find. I went to change the caps out on my battery and noticed cables inside and with a closer look there is a battery in the battery. I could have done that and it explains why the battery is so much lighter. I'm going to call Monday and get the skinny, it had better be one hell of a battery for what I paid.

That company has been making them with that arrangement for years...The only true conventional, maintenance free AGM battery was/is the turbostart unit...IMO the "battery in a battery" set-up is just another set of connections to make problems whether it's their battery or a home made one..With that being said they do have many happy customers that haven't had any issues...

Someone else posted that same finding of a battery in a battery. Is this one quite light in weight? Or is it about 50lbs? Heck if my agm red cap is hollowed out, I can just put in a replacement when it dies.

My last one was an AGM and I dug it all out as well. I wasn't sold on the extra cable connections is why I ordered a new battery just to get what I already had done.

I dropped the superstock battery back off and they replaced the loose negative post without any question. All good now. That battery was $355 and the red cap 27 was $265. He knocked a little off for paying cash. My receipt says 48 month warranty for these batteries. The 27 group is a battery within empty battery case. The superstock is not. That thing is a boat anchor. Right now i’m happy with purchase. At this point we’ll see what their life span is.

Ok the Superstocker is a boat anchor. How about the Red cap 27 weight?

After sending some pm's to 6PKRTSE I decided to do my own battery in a battery! The first day I turned it over and cut the bottom out. Then I got worried about getting lead poisoning! When I got back to it I started carving out one of the middle cells. The first cell took about 2 days of my spare time. The second cell took about a day and the last four I got done in one day. I learned how to pry things apart and got more efficient. I have posted a picture looking in the bottom with the PC925 installed and another of the battery in a battery installed. It works great and looks great! If I have a battery failure I just have to replace the inner one. If anyone has a dead group 27 red cap that they would like to get rid of I would like to do another for my other car. Send me a pm or e-mail me at moparjohn@frontier.com
Thanks!

Hey that looks familiar. Nice job. Yeah, I have another dead core here to gut for my next project car someday. I may even do it for the trunk of my race car just for the "Mopar" look still.

I have 2 dead red caps gathering dust in my basement. I'd like to try to convert one if I ever gather the time and ambition.
But I could part with the other. I don't want to try to ship it, but if you get up into the Chicago burbs or are still interested in November and coming to MCACN let me know and we can get together.
I ordered a group 24 in March, and heard from Jims that they took over Antique Auto Battery in around Memorial Day. They said they'd have my order from March shipped in 3 weeks. I finally got it around a week ago! I haven't fired up the car yet, but hopefully the battery is good after making me wait 5+ months!

Just received a battery from the former antique auto battery, took about six weeks and it is GREAT! An employee from Antique Auto Battery took it over, they were personable and professional and supplied the product, give them a shot. Bing Antique Auto Bsttery and give them a call. Ps their new web site was not up 2 weeks ago, that is the reason to search Antique Auto batt.

So for Turbo Start, who or where is a company rep?
Are these the same as Fred Gilmore formerly rep'd for?

I contacted Turbostart thru their website. I emailed them earlier this year and the person that got back to me said late 2018 or early 2019.
They should update their site with info, but they don't. They list the batteries but say Out of Stock. Wait and see game.

Has anyone purchased a red-cap battery this year?
Who has them?

The last info I've read over on the A12 Registry was on the last page of this thread link from member TURBOSTART http://a12mopar.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1484102345/45#45

We are making the yellow, red and green battery again . I have read a lot on this post and AAB puts smaller batteries inside of there batteries . we will be making the correct CCA Batteries . Ours are AGM batteries, however I'm reading where you guys are being able to change the caps out to different colors. ours will be glued in so you cant change them and we do that to keep a good seal. Thanks guys hope this helps

There is a yellow cap Mopar battery on ebay. It is supposed to be NOS.

I don't think the one on Ebay is an NOS one as I heard originals had 4 holes in the vent caps not one like the repros had.

You may be right as I don`t have a clue if it is or isn`t NOS. I figured someone here would know for sure.

Spot on fuelishnsilly up

Mike

an original from a first gen Charger survivor (red cap) versus the ebay claimed nos yellow cap. (hate posting this, afraid a future seller may modify the cap with five holes but if the do there's something else on the cap (and battery) they can't modify that I'm not telling or posting......so there tonguue tonguue

A12,

Ok, so I was wrong. Looks like it was 5 holes instead of 4 like I had heard someone say at one point. Do I get any points for being close? lol

So I bought Joes ( 70gtx440dana ) dead battery.
The thing that got my interest was that the caps were not glued on!
Joe also told me that when he removed the caps it looked red inside?
My thinking was maybe it's a battery in a battery?
So today I started working on this battery shown in my fist picture.
My second picture shows the battery with the caps removed.
I also saw the red down inside there?
I found a seam where the battery was put together.
I started tapping it along this seam and it finally popped open!
I have it shown in my third picture.
The battery case had cracked where the top was glued on.
But it was low enough not to show when reassembled.
Now we can see what the red was from!
Two small batteries wired together and then to the terminals.
I couldn't get the batteries loose so I had to cut the bottom out.
I show the batteries out in my last picture.
To be continued!

So now I removed my PC925 from my other battery that has glued on caps and attached the cables from the lid of this one.
I show that in my first picture.
Then I got some Styrofoam and made some padding to hold the pc925 in place.
That is my second picture.
I got it all back together and ready to install!
Shown in the third picture.
The last picture shows it installed in my Superbird with the caps off!
When you look inside on this one you see the side of the PC925 and it's black and looks good in there!
I wanted one that looked more correct and now I have it!
Thanks JOE!
If anyone out there has another dead red cap group 27 with removable caps I would like to get another.

John,

Glad I could help out. If I had known it would be so easy I would have done it myself. I had seen the other posts where guys had spent hours carving out a donor for the conversion. Did not want to deal with that. Take care! Joe

Joe,
It's not as easy as I made it look in pictures!
That first one that I carved out was a pain!
But I learned a lot from that one and wouldn't do another one of those!
But I am curious as to how those 2 motorcycle batteries started your car and how long did they last?
Thanks again!
MJ

Seeing that we're on gutted battery projects, I recently cut open my AGM Turbostart gas mat repro battery (group 27) to set it up for a battery within a battery senario (I had gotten 11 yrs of service from it, not bad!), I cut the top of the battery off, leaving the bottom intact, I cut it off where it looked like it was seamed, my end result will be to have the bottom section of the group 27 act like a battery box to contain the hidden battery as well as shield it should it leak/gas out/vent, thus saving my engine compartment from any mess, I plan on attaching the top of the group 27 to the hidden battery with a mechanical buss attachment rather than cables, the battery hold down will act as a hold down to not only retain the dummy group 27, but secure the surgically altered top to the base/box as well....

here's what the gas mat repro batteries look like inside for those interested ...

John, I picked up the battery second hand from a guy whom decided to restomod his 71 RR after originally restoring it. I believe he used the battery 2-3 years and I used if for 3 seasons. So it lasted approximately 6 years. I must say i did not maintain a charge as well as I could have during the off season. I may have a gotten another season or two out of it with proper maintenance.

very nice work shown for those that have inserted modern, small batteries, into a period case . up
the only thing i can suggest, would be to use marine heat shrink [with the glue inside that seals the tubing] at the crimped end connection to insure humidity and/or outgassing from wicking into the cable[s], causing corrosion to start at that point. an extra few seconds to add to the assembly, but as i have repaired a ton of wiring issues over the years, this may be worth considering on something you can't see without going to a lot of effort.

Mike,
I you still have the top as it was cut off could you post a picture looking at the bottom or inside?
It looks like cutting the top off makes it a lot easier to remove the cells from the bottom!
It took me a long time to carve the cells out piece by piece from the bottom!
Thanks! John

I cut my top off. And then used Expoxy In had on hand to add some Plastic Angle so it does not move around.
This was the 1st fitment. Cables will go on the opposite way Clamps on battery post inside and bolted with a 3/8" bolt to the washers.
I did what I normally do went crazy and detailed the case. Light sand and Buff and hand Polish.
