Are the Nippondenso alternators out of a 90's dodge internally regulated or do we still use the regulator on the firewall like the original alternators? Not sure how to wire the one I purchased awhile back.

mine is a denso 120 amp external regulated on the 440 truck (not sure what it is from/double groove pulley)

I have a denso mini (smaller than my denso120amp) from 88 van/double pulleys that is external regulated. not sure what amp?

IIRC they ditched the VR on firewall in 89-93

if it has a serp pully I think those are internal regulated

swing by an autozone and have them toss it on the machine and test it. that will let you know for sure.

Mine came with serpentine and v groove pulley in the box. I'll have to get some numbers off it and see if I bought a dud....

the alt doesn't know or care if it is being controlled by an external VR or a computer. That same alternator was used for about 8 years, and it was regulated both ways. and serpentine pulleys can be swapped out for V pulleys and vise versa easily enough... done so more than once.

on the 91s (seems worst year for VR part of computer brain frying) vans/pickups/Dakotas, I have seen them all with the regulator wires dug out of the harness and a plain old Mopar VR wired in.

you can wire it up with either the dual field vr from 74 and up or ground one of the field wires and use the single field wire vr.

I have mine wired up to a single field vr and just ran a ground wire to the plug.

the plug was the hardest thing to get. had to go to a yard to find one that wasn't clipped off.
