This is my dilemma:

I have a 1971 Fury I 440 HP police car that needs a new fuel sending unit. The original has a 5/16" fuel outlet and 1/4" fuel return nipple. OEM part number is 3621608. This is a four vent fuel tank system with E.C.S.

The only senders I find available for C body do not have a return line shruggy For example part number 3420849.

Does anyone know if my part is available? help

Thank you in advance for your reply.

If not available, adding the return is no big deal.

There are places that can rebuild your sending unit. Just do a search and there are several choices. I don't know who is good though. You can only hope they are all good.

Have you run the part number through the dealer? You'd be surprised some times.

My 71 parts book only shows 2 part numbers. One for car 3420849 and one for station wagon 3420850. Police has a special section and it calls for the part number 3621608 as you listed. I checked parts voice and none showed up.

I have a volare that has a two model year only sending unit that is hard to find. I was thinking of removing the gauge portion of a nos sending unit and switching it with the old one. I wonder if anyone has done that before? I can`t remember how it is attached to the tube.

i have re-tubed sending units a few times, using 3/8 and 1/2" tube. i silver soldered the gauge unit to the tube. worked very well.

Thank you everyone for your advice! bow

I have scoured the internet and can not find the correct part.

I am tempted to solder in the additional return line to my NOS C-body sender. But I am afraid that the heat required would ruin the plastic insulators for the wire, not to mention ruin the coating.

I am looking in too sending the old unit out for restoration. But it is terribly rusty as it sat in bad gasoline for 11 years! I did get a new tank, pad, rubber hoses, clamps, etc.

Does anyone have an opinion about adding a fuel bulkhead connector from Earl's or the like???

BTW:

Correction, the return line is 5/16" and not 1/4" as stated in my first post.

Thank you.

Should include a photo of your sending unit. If its rusted, you might be able to get some of that Rust remover liquid where you just soak the part for a day. Unless the tubes are rusted through and through. You have a hard part to find there.

Here is one source. I've ordered parts from them with no issues though I've not used their rebuilding service.
