iagree I have Dynamaxs ahead of the axle and cheap glasspacks (bullets) behind. Sounds good, very similar to what our cars sounded like "back then". No drone in the car and you can talk or hear the radio if you want.

And I have electric cut-outs for when I want everyone's attention. I have had cut-outs on my cars for 20 years or so and will never have another muscle car without them. They are a blast, like at car shows. You fire it up and watch everyone jump. Or crack them open and hammer it a little, then close them right back up and the cop around the corner is looking at the rustang behind you with the loud Flowmasters when you roll by.

I run knock off magnaflows called xlerators made by AP at the end of 3" stopping infront of the rear axle. Not super loud, but has a deep penetrating sound.
Can hear the radio, but can't hold a conversation at 3500 rpm on the highway, but thats ok with me. smoke

I have a weird mash-up now of what came with the car vs what I added, but it sounds pretty cool.

At this point, I have Doug's headers going into a 2.5" X pipe that reduces to 2.25" to a couple of Flowmaster 40s before the axle, and then angled dumps by the rear quarter corners.

The Flowmasters really sounded like a boat in a tunnel on the stock manifolds. My first set of full-length headers really changed the character of it. Adding the X-pipe gave it this crazy tone shift past about 3k or so that makes it sound like a late-model Mustang.

This is a stock Magnum 318 btw, I'm not restricting myself with the tail end wink

BTW, nobody needs backpressure. It has been dyno-proven over and over again. We don't have 2-stroke motors. You sound like a friggin cave relic trying to give people that "advice" nowadays.

I never could afford the expensive TTI or anything like that. I bought a bunch of Schoenfeld 90 degree elbows & 18" straight pipe lengths and made my own from the Hooker Super Comp Headers. It's a 3-1/2" dia. X Pipe to the Flowmaster muffler reduced to 3' after the mufflers up over the axle back & through the stock modified tips.

It's been on my since my old house so that has got to make it almost 20 years old now. Always get compliments on how good it sounds but the car looks so stock.

I have about $250.00 into the whole set up and only took me about 4-5 hours to make and that was laying on my back, marking with a sharpie & cutting everything with my hand held band saw. Most exhaust shops wanted like $600.00 to install & that was with me supplying the parts for them to do it.

THIS IS my Frankenstein Dart Sport 400BB.Full 3 inch TTI with "H" pipe and the quietest Dynomax mufflers TTI sells. This was a second gear shifting to high as I didn't want to scar the driveway for life...It gives everyone idle and about 4 to 4,500 rpm sound. This engine will rev to 7K no problem and has a huge cam. It has zero drone with this cam.

Pypes Violators have the best sound that I have found, and still flow well. Chokemasters don't flow particularly well, but do sound good.
I had Dynomax Super Turbos on my Bee, and was less than impressed. They don't sound bad. But they were a little quiet and didn't have a great sound to them. The Ultraflows from above sure sound great, though.

I chose the Dynomax mufflers because I wanted something more mild at idle and cruising speeds, and something that would open up and get loud when I crack the throttle / make pass etc. They are a bit mild tempered at idle, but at WOT, you really hear the engine scream. They don't really mask anything or create any boominess like flowmaster achieves.

I chose a set with an opposite off-set of the entrance and exit which I believe has the best flow characteristics internally. I'm also running an X pipe as well. While it does sound more mild than my past setups, I like it.

Charger has 2 1/2" Flowmasters on it (has had them since about '99 when my son started driving it. Drone is terrible.
About to order 3" Powersticks for it. Check out the thread on the General board about them. up

I run the TTI full 3" system and the Dyno-Max Ultra-Flow mufflers. And that's because I raced my car capped up and the Ultra-Flows are one of the best flowing mufflers and that's what I wanted since I race through the pipes. Ron

Find what sound you like and find out what makes it that way..

You can tell that a couple things affect exhaust note - the engine itself of course - compression, cam etc.. then it will depend on pipe diameter, whether you have H or X pipes, plus the mufflers, even straight or downturned exhaust tips if you want to nitpick..

- adding H or X pipes will soften the sharp compression notes.
- muffler sounds are subjective.. I have Flowmasters. They do have a rather loud resonance around 45mph.

Listen to this clip (skip to 0:30 mark) for an example of a 9.4 compression 361 big block, 4bbl, slightly bumped cam, stock manifold, into dual 2in pipes, no H pipe, and Flowmasters... at low idle.

https://youtu.be/YqYCA3ax8Bw

Listen to this clip (skip to 1:30 mark) for a stock 383, 4bbl, stock manifold, into 2" dual pipes, with H pipe, and Flowmasters.. at normal idle.

When I was younger I never liked the flow master sound. Nowadays they’re my favorite sounding muffler. Funny how things change.

I have Thrush welded on a 318 in a 78 Sport Fury, not as obnoxious as Flowbastards…. I like glass packs with a slightly smaller diam tailpipe, the Magnaflow on my 93 Dakota sounded pretty good too.
