When looking at purchasing a used 8 3/4 center section that is not in a car, what should you check for to be sure it is a good, usable part? Or, can't you tell until it is actually installed in the car?

I would inspect the gears to make sure there are no chipped or broken teeth, look at the ring and pinion to see if the wear pattern is good, then make sure it turns smoothly without a lot of slop. You don't want to see a bunch of rust or dirt in it.

I agree. I see them in the dirt at swap meets and the want 400-600 calling it a good core.

I have them "LOOK" real good and howl when run.

so it is rolling the dice. but there are good used ones out there and depends on how bad you want one.

I swapped all my 80s trucks over to 8 3/4-green bearing for fast gear change. but my 74-489/3.91sg is howling, my 72-741/2.76 open roars, my 67-742/3.23 open is good shape.
not bad enough to make me stop driving them and they all have well over 300,000 miles...still going.

at the 1200$ price for a new rebuild or a 600$ known good one the best bang for the buck would be a call to Dr. Diff for any 8 3/4 needs.

used to new he has great service with best pricing around.

send him yours or buy/exchange what ever you need.

It's a crap shoot , consider it a core , especially if it has a CONE TYPE sure grip and pay accordingly ... ASSUME it needs to be rebuilt .

If it's a popular gear ratio just buy a new gear set .

running up my post count some more .

iagree You can't tell a third member's condition by looking unless, of course, there's some obvious damage.

I'm going to look at a 742 case so if I'm not mistaken that is a clutch type, correct? The seller told me the only thing wrong with it is that due to it having been used with green bearings on the axles it is missing the thrust spacers. My axles don't have green bearings on them so is this anything to worry about or an easy fix?

Yes OE it is a clutch type & the odds are extremely great that it still is & ain't been switched & as soon as you see it you will know (cone has the visible springs/open has the visible mini spider gears) & the clutch type will pretty much be enclosed (cant see inside) & have some bolts where the case halves are bolted together. As said unless it has blued gears or chipped teeth or obvious highly worn teeth plus how tight the clutches still are it comes down to the integrity of the seller and a high ratio 2.94/2.76.3.23 out of a daily driver has a good chance of still being tight (clutches) & ok on the teeth (might be rare for the teeth to be worn badly, not sure on that, others will clarify) & the clutches can be rebuilt & Dr Diff I'm sure has the 2 buttons/pin to go in there so you can use regular bearinged axles. a 4:10/4:56 has a much greater chance of being haveing been hotrodded & needing rebuilding. I'd want a guarantee that they wont howl!
#1 #1 has HE ACTUALLY personally run it in HIS vehicle??? EDIT I reread & since it has been run with green bearinged axles that tells me that it has been hot rodded, to what extent I do not know.

It is a 3.23 sure grip with a date code for 1967. The seller said it hasn't been used in many years but was in his 69 Road Runner at one time.

I finally got around to picking up this center section over the weekend. It is clean and not rusty, gear teeth look good and are not blued and everything spins freely. As mentioned, I just have to get the thrust spacers and pin to use with my stock style bearings.
