Hi all,

1971 Satellite w/factory A/C - I'm looking for a valid replacement for the factory vacuum-actuated water valve. This regulates the amount of water going into and out of the heater core. I can get one that is like the original (1st pic, below), but I've read that they were failure-prone even back then.

Apparently, this part was superseded by the factory (pics 2 & 3, below). I have been unable to locate one of these that is vacuum-actuated (cable-actuated is available). One hose goes thru the valve, but I can't tell if the other hose is straight-thru or not(?).

The last pic, below, shows what I have found: Four Seasons/Everco 74690. Notice it only allows fittings for one hose, whereas the others allow both inlet and outlet hoses to be attached. It also says "For cars without A/C". Opinions? All suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Roger

All the bakelite style factory valves had their issues...But the real question is how long do you think it takes for it to fail in your application ??? I've had them last for quite a few years{as in 10 plus} under occasional driving...Now if you're driving to work every day and cranking the heat during the winter using the valve then it might fail somewhat quicker...I guess it all comes down to whether you want the engine bay to look original or it doesn't matter...

My car is far from stock, so I'd rather have it work well than look concours correct.

Yeah, the 4 season valve will work and probably be much cheaper than the bakelite piece...
Make sure you know what/if the bracket comes with it... Most replacements won't have the same bolt pattern as your inner fender I've had to make or modify the brackets so there isn't a bunch of extra holes in that area...
Those style valves will work fine securing only one hose but you may need to fab an additional bracket to help hold the other heater hose in that area simply to keep it up and out of the way..
Lastly, keep it simple and use a vacuum piece like the one pictured I'm not sure how you would incorporate a cable operated unit without a big process and a bunch of your time..

Thanks, guys. Looks like I have two choices: I can either buy an NOS Everco valve on eBay, with the bracket in place, or I can buy a new Everco and make my own bracket. I may go with the latter, since I'm leery of using a 40-year-old vacuum diaphragm. Thanks again!

Got over 20 years on a 'bakelite' A/C water valve...

It's doing just fine...

I just found a spare I think is the right one too. Shoot me a PM with email and I can send a picture if interested.
