Hi Gang, I'm looking at getting a 1/2 ton Ram 4 door. Thinking about a '11 or newer as a self-imposed limit, with a cap of around $25,000.

Are there any lemons in this group? Some transmissions or engine years better than others? I would like to have 4WD with the full-time 4WD option as I have a couple new drivers in the family and we live in snow country. I'm not a big fan of the shift knob on the dash, but I'm not that vain if it is a better system.

Anything in particular to look for or avoid?

I have a 14 crew cab 1500 5.7/8spd

I do not have the fulltime t case.

No problems with my truck, I tow a lot with it, and drive it in all bad conditions. The 8spd is returning great fuel economy. on stock size tires I was getting 17/21 now I get 16-17 on 35s I also don't drive gingerly

Mine is a basic tradesman with the all the tow package options and the 5.0 radio. I highly recommend the built in brake controller if you are going to tow a trailer with electric brakes.

I've had a new '04,09,11,12,14, and 17 ram 1500's. The 09 was definitely the best quality. I think that the 17 is in second place behind it. I would seek out a good low mileage 09 if I was you.
For sure get the Hemi.

Interesting that a first year truck would be better quality. Any problems with the 6 or 8 speed automatics?

I really like the 8-speed. But I haven't had any trouble with any of them. The thing about the 09 is they did a great job designing it, and then spent the next 10 years trying to figure out how to make it cheaper. Like the quality of the materials on the interior, the ride quality and noise level got worse over time Etc

Bought a 13 1500 4x4 longhorn last november . . . check service records if you can - (5.7 hemi) ticking noise when engine cold but goes away once warmed up, like 5 minutes or so - broken exhaust manifold bolts/studs. Very common, and about $400/side to fix at dealer !!! . . . I wanted the 8spd auto - 13 was first year as option, then std after that. Also, the "non towing" mirrors were POWER FOLD . . kinda nice option to have too ! Have to admit, finding a fully loaded Longhorn, it is a really really nice truck ! I call it the new age "C Body" - quietest vehicle I have to run down the road in.

I would think at a cap of $25k (US funds), you should be able to find some nice 13-15 trucks !!! Maybe even some with factory warranty left on em.
