Now I really want to try a honeycomb (about 1" thick) on top of the carb (would only work without choke horn). This would remove almost all turbulence just above the boosters.

I googled carb honeycomb, couldn't find anything. Who can explain with a pic or two?

Here is a honeycomb for a MAF where they are used to straighten the air flow to ensure a proper metering. Should work on a carb just as well.
