Looking for suggestions for an intake manifold for a 426" 2nd gen Hemi.

The catch is it needs to be a cast intake (sheet metal not allowed) and it needs to support 2x4's up to 8-8500 rpm.

What should I be looking for?

This is a race only application with a 4-speed for Nostalgia Super Stock.

If you are talking inline I assume the Stage V would be the one. I have used the Mod Man and it ran well but it has a bolt on sheet metal top. You would have to see if it's legal.

The top of the manifold can be fabricated.

1.16 INTAKE MANIFOLD
INTAKE MANIFOLD: Sheet metal intake prohibited. Manifolds restricted to commercially available cast units. Top of manifold lid may be modified and fabricated as necessary to accommodate carburetor placement.

Good. Now we need someone (maybe AndyF) to chime in as to which of those 2 would make more power. I have not run the Stage V. I hate say anything good about Indy but I couldn't believe it when we took off a $3,500 Ray Barton intake and put on a Mod Man and only lost 3 hundreths.

Mmm, I like my Indy Tunnel Ram (of course name has all been welded up & bead lasted off) with dual Dominators. Spun up to 8100 on Dyno. It has a bolt on cast top (not sheet metal though).

If it was me based on what I know now and you need a inline 2x4 intake I would use the Stage V with as big as possible and legal carbs. up work
That single plane intake manifold should flow as much air as needed to get the motor to rev up as high as you want it to as long as the valve train will do the same work shruggy
Dang them 426 style Hemiriod motors and their stock goofy valve train anyways runaway shruggy
There are a lot better choices on the valve train and rocker arm set ups out there scope up twocents

I purchased a freshened up SS/AH short block that was set up to shift at 9500rpm. So the bottom end will live. We are not going to turn it that high so we can save the valve train LOL. I couldn't find any info for rpm ranges for most of the intakes I have looked at online. Even considered some of the old rat roasters, but there is even less info on those!

I wish I could run a tunnel ram, but they are prohibited. That leaves only a few choices. For the carbs, I plan on using the carbs from my wedge. They are heavily worked over Eddie 800's. Right now they are working well on my 496" wedge shifting at 7600 rpm.

If you can't run the Indy Tunnelram, then you're gonna want the Stage V inline dual quad manifold. Being that this is for NSS, Indy has the big box style crossram hemi manifold w/ a couple different tops available (twin 4500 or twin 4150). I'm not sure, but I'd bet the Stage V manifold would make more power than that Indy crossram manifold.

I would guess that the Rat Roaster is a dog compared to todays manifolds. I figure the Indy crossram is the same. The new Edelbrock is great for stock cars because you can still use the stock air grabber hood, but for your application, I'm betting on Stage V or Mod Man.

The "worked" rat roaster will work fine for the setup restrictions you have. RPM no problem, Period correct too. You don't need low end with a 4 speed, ring er up there and side step it, it's a Hemi.

What are you aiming for? Ray B made 800+ on pump gas with Edelbrock heads, intake, and carbs.

Bang for the buck the Stage V is hard to beat. Simple and effective. Linkage is Piece of cake and the 800 AVS carbs work quite well. Built many this way for both street and NSS.

Just had a street strip 10.5 cr Motor built by AJ Casini at Bob George Racing on the dyno., It has the Eddy single plane with 2 650 avs carbs, Indy standard SR heads and small roller. 4.250 x 4.250 482 ci. Made 642 hp and almost 600 ft lbs on a very conservative dyno and pump gas. Have not even began to tune on it yet. The dyno operator said it was the most crisp and responsive Hemi he has tested. Will be posting more when I have graphs and info.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

With the RPM we will be running I would think the larger plenums of the Indy, or the old Rat Roaster would probably give an advantage over the intakes with smaller runners.

With my wedge I launch at 5700 and shift at 7600 (4-Speed)with a 4.86 gear. This past week I installed a 5.00 gear and we adjusted 4 link to tame the wheelies.

Idle is and street manners are very low priorities as this will be a high winding race only setup.

What are your thoughts on runner lengths and plenum volumes for these intakes? Does anyone have any links to flow data for the INDY or Stage V intakes? Stock and or modified?

We are allowed to use spacers to increase the volume of the plenum. On my wedge I am running s STR15 with a 1/2 plenum spacer and 1" carb spacers under the 800 cfm eddies. It seems to work well with this engine.

From everything I've seen, the old Rat Roasters don't come close in power to any of the newer manifolds. None of the old style crossrams do either, but they do look cool.
