It’s Friday, so the Agent has been perusing the news to bring you something a little different. This week it is money. Although the ratings for NHRA on FS1 have not been spectacular, NASCAR has seen its ratings plummet almost steadily from 2009. This year’s Daytona 500 was down 22 percent from last year.

Costs are going up and teams have to stretch their budgets. Ralph Sheheen reports in Speed Sport that some NASCAR teams are bringing their own ice to the race tracks. It’s cheaper than buying it at the venue, saving the teams as much as $700 a weekend. Add that up over 30-plus weekends and it’s a significant savings.

That’s how tight budgets are getting these days, even for the top-tier organizations. And that’s a chilling thought.

$700 in ice? How much ice does a team go through?

That's how tight they should have always been! This disconnect is why I think people are no longer flocking to top tier professional races...the participants have lost sight due to how refined the sports have developed into.

$700 on ice means the teams aren't doing what it takes to keep costs down for the spectators. Their overhead is more, so everything else has to increase, including ticket costs

And the at track cost of food/drink to the spectators has something to do with that.

A lot of these teams have tents set up for sponsors and their families. They go through a lot of food, alcohol, pop, water, and yes, ice.

word is if this keeps up, Hendricks won't be able to afford a multi car team.

Not sure how it is at other tracks, but the concessions at Joliet are all outside vendors who get to charge whatever they want.

...and I bet they pay out the waazoo to the track for the privilege of being there.

not sure why... but I much more enjoy watching 38 nostalgia funny cars battling for 32 spots than I do going to Pomona, Vegas, or Phoenix for one of the NHRA national event.
