How much cam lift can you have on 440 906 heads with out doing any machining to the valve guides. I want to get a lunati voodoo cam it has 494/513 lift, will I have enough valve retainer to valve guide clearance on stock 906 heads. I will be using stock stamped rockers.

Not sure if this will help as I don;t recall the casting # of the heads but I did have a 525 hyd cam w/ my old iron heads. They were built for a different combo so I doubt any special work was done but it was almost 10 yrs ago.

you need to double check before final assembly, but you can usually get away with almost .550 lift before you have clearance issues.

Well I think the rule of thumb is not to go over 500 lift with stock rockers without going with ajustable rockers but I do have a XE284 with 510 lift cam in my 69 charger 500. It has stealth heads with stock rockers and 9.1 compression and runs great. Runs 3.90's at 98 but I need slicks.

I thought I read some where that .510 lift was the most you could go with out guide to retainer clearance problems, also read .480 was the most. I like the lunati .494/.513 268 cam, but I don't want to have to shorten the valve guides. If .513 is too much lift for stock 906 heads I will pick another cam with less lift. Thanks for any info

I have a 906 head with one broken guide and 4 others that had definite contact with the retainers with the 509 purple cam. With my next set of 452's I had my bro-in-law grind .100 off the guide on a surface grinder and that worked OK

The .513 lift would be with 1.5 rockers. Since you're gonna run stock stamped steel rockers, they are less than 1.5, so the .513 becomes something less. Maybe more like .500 lift, in reality? Would that be safe to run without needing to mess with the retainers?

Very likely would be but there is only one way to be sure. Install the valve and put the retainer on without any spring and measure the distance from the retainer to the guide with the seal in place and sea that you have for travel before it hits the guide/seal.
