My car ('71 RR) was originally produced with a 383. I have had a 440-6 in it since 1979. I am getting ready to install the engine this spring, and considering the costs to go through the 440, can a 408" be purchased for a reasonable cost?

My questions are;
1. who has a 408" that can give me input about drivability/performance?
2. Is there a similar combo to put in?

And, any other feedback that anyone can offer.

Gar

.

I'm guessing you are asking about a 408" small block? For the cost to convert to a small block I'd just go through the 440. Even if you had the block and a good transmission the cost of the build will be more than the 440 rebuild.

100% agreed.

Yeah, I suppose you are both right. I have all the stuff to put the 440 together. probably getting too old to just go out and get it done....lol.

Yep, if it were mine I would just stay with the 440. Too much
involved to swap everything to small block status. Engine/trans/radiator/driveshaft..blah blah.. blah

I wouldn't put a small block in place of your 440.

As a 408 stroker owner I would suggest sticking with the 440 for cost and results. 408s are cool if you are replacing a small block but there is no replacement for displacement. Stick with the bigblock.

I have fun out running big blocks with my small blocks.

I'll bet you have a lot more invested in your small blocks to do it.

Be very careful with your money, Dan's cars run very hard. With iron heads I might add.
