I have a 92 B250 cargo van 5.2 MPI/auto that the speedometer quit working. Electric speedo/no cable. The odometer DOES work as well as the cruise control. I replaced the speed sensor on the transmission, but no luck.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Had a few speedos of that era take a dump at higher miles on some rams and ramchargers. Must be common. I would think that new ones are possibly discontinued.

Just a guess.
Being the odo and cruise works, I believe the speedo gauge itself needs to be repaired or replaced.

I have mechanical Aptitude.

Two things to check. Now, I'm not particularly intimate with the Dodge van, but a lot of mopar products of this era have a speedometer that "plugs in" to the printed circuit board. The "plugs" look eerily similar to the pins on the back of our 70's-era gauge clusters, but are much longer.

I've seen these pins get corroded and since they are longer, they can also break off losing contact with the PCB. IIRC, it takes three or four pins to run the speedohead, if one breaks, the odo will still work, but the speedo may not. (or vice versa)

Check that first, but failing that, you may need a new speedo.

Probably the drive motor for the speedo, my 92 ctd has issues once in a while.

Should be repairable.

Google "GM speedometer problems", huge recall on them. Mopar might have used the same supplier.

I have had problems with the odometer quitting but the speedometer still works. Problem is a little 14 tooth plastic gear, the dia. of a pencil eraser, loses some or all of the teeth. The gear can be bought on feeBay. Maybe something similar makes the speedo work???

I will probably install an aftermarket GPS speedometer for the time being so it will pass a safety inspection to get the tags renewed. Will look for another factory unit in the local yards.

Thanks for the replies!

I just called a place that does safety inspections and they tell me that a functioning speedometer is not necessary to pass the inspection. I didn't know that.

I had a 66 300 with the infamous non-functioning speedo.
All the screws face the firewall.

I use a GPS stuck to the windshield...Done.AND passed inspection.
