I wouldn't pay anything for it. If he had this stuff and offered to send it to me, I would have offered to cover his postage and give him a few bucks (I'm thinking a $20 in an envelope + a thank-you card) for his time. If he approached me asking for dough like it sounds this guy did, I would pass.

Look at it as if you were buying your SIXPACK challenger, What value would a build sheet have if you did not have one? If it is not worth more then the $20-$50 people are talking here just send it all back That is ridiculous!

Exactly: When you are buying a Six Pack car having a build sheet or not can make the difference between buying the car or not for a lot of people. The extra build sheet isn't a make or break but it is a really nice thing to have. I doubt the guy would expect $1000 but a smaller token would be nice. I myself would have given the sheet to you but if I had one given to me I would want to buy the guy a nice dinner and a beer anyway, that's how you should look at it I think.

At some point in time the old receipts might be as valuable as the sheets.

As fake docs get more prolific and higher quality: old pics, receipts, history all add to making a case for a car to be authentic.

Also these higher end cars being sold more frequently, at brokers, and at auctions all wash history away from a car. That just puts caution to buyers... caution equal lower selling prices.

Here are a couple V-code build sheets I have had for years Posted in the lost and found section no response.

I have Seen where a Guy had a 1 million dollar CUDA and the previous owner had kept the build sheet for it, Previous owner wanted a HEMI CHARGER in trade for the build sheet as HE thought it Brought 10% value to the CUDA! True story...

Honestly the broadcast sheet on a V code is worth several hundred dollars after that id be out. A 2nd partial copy even less, But even $1000 is a far cry from people asking Hemi Chargers or 10gs. This is the reason most people in the thread are stating the person who has the sheet should take what they can get be it $50 or whatever.
Receipts and the unsubstantiated blurb are worth 0.

Some people like to differentiate their cars with option, colour break downs, etc,

I like to differentiate cars with their known history which most often can be determined with repair receipts and ownership contacts. Assuming two restored cars are fairly well the same when talking about model, engine, transmission and colour, the documents can give a clearer understanding of what you are buying. To me, that can add value and be the determining factor if I buy one car over another.

When faced with paying for such documentation I am willing to pay up for such added value to a reasonable level. My level may be seen as generous to some of the posters on this thread and has reached the four digit level for what I felt was critical documentation. The situation that Phil has revealed is total blackmail in my opinion and I would wish nothing but ill will on the individual requesting such compensation.

BS27R1B,

I agree with your thinking.
Most people are in it for the cash only.
That is what ruined it for a lot of us as far
as the Hobby goes. It is like paying ransom.
Hopefully Morty gets treated fairly, it is useless to anyone
that doesn't own the car.
Good luck

Many opinions here and everyone is entitled to theirs. Two years ago I paid $500 for the found buildsheet for my T/A which had no buildsheet or fender tag. I was thrilled to get it and fine with the $500. To each his own.

I agree with other anything from $20.00 to $50.00 seems fair. I have found & given a lot of paper work fender tags etc to others that have bought things off of me for free just to keep it with the vehicles where they belong.

I have been treated fairly. He sent the stuff on his own dime with just the note that I might send him a little something since he had a medical issue that has kind of upended his life. I did not mention this because I did not want people's opinions skewed by this.

I have met this guy before and he's an up and up guy. He apologized for asking for money and I feel he is sincere.

I have no problem rewarding the effort because he could have thrown it all in the recycling (or worse yet the trash.

Since you have already received the documents and it's ONLY a reward vs hostage negotiations, then I agree $50 VISA gift card is a nice reward... my 2 cents....

In this case, the paperwork was sent first on his dime.

Consider sending what you think is fair plus whatever the postage was with a nice thank you card & a photo or two of the car?

there is a BIG BIG BIG BIG difference between NO build sheet and a PARTIAL SECOND build sheet.

if i had the opportunity to buy my original build sheet when i didn't have one for $500. i would probably hurt my arm pulling out my wallet fast to pay the man before he changes his mind.

a partial second sheet and a few repair receipts for my car. i would have to think long and hard before i would pay more than $50 for it.
just my opinion.

Barry - that is what i will be doing. More than the vast majority has said because I agree that the effort needs to be rewarded. This guy is not looking to make a fortune. He is looking to stay connected to the car. If he was in the right position he would be offering to acquire the car. Sadly, he can't and I have no desire to sell it.

I hope to start it's restoration this year and will publish it's history and all the time and cost needed to bring these things back.

Thanks
Morty

If it were a sheet to a more collectable car like your 6 pak, then I'd probably shoot him $100. If I had the sheet and it was your car, I'd send it for free, but probably ask for a nice craft beer from a brewery in your area that I can't get local.

Cracks me up reading this post, mopar people are so cheap. The more documentation one has for their car is always a plus. No reason one shouldn’t be willing to pay what a good dinner for two would cost (couple hundred bucks)for build sheet or similar documents dealing with history.

I know I'll get pooped on for saying this, and perhaps rightly so but I kinda feel like the kind of guys willing to pay 500 bucks for a sheet of paper to go with a car are what has driven this hobby away from enjoying badass and cool cars to investment and greed.

Big big difference there. If he sent it upfront on his dime I would be 100x more inclined to give him something in return.
