So the other day I got a text message from the third owner of my Plum Crazy 70 SIXPACK Challenger. He stated that he had some documentation for the car and some receipts from the original owner and the second owner.

So here is what he sent:

- Partial Broadcast sheet - about 75% there, missing the lower left corner (keep in mind I have complete Broadcast sheet for the car.
- Receipts from 1973 to 1983 for everything the original owner spent money on. My favorite is the transmission rebuild at 21000 miles. The 672 automatic with the 4.10 Dana had a chance.
- Registration for the original owner
- Receipts from 1983 from the second owner for getting the car on the road again.
- Receipts from the third owner including having the transmission replaced.
- A little blurb on the car's history and what happened to it. It was traded in by the third owner for a Dodge Colt Turbo.

So what are these items worth? The guy would like to get a little something for the effort and I have no problem rewarding him.

What would you guys do?

Thanks

I get to hear a lot of theses type stories doing what I do, so.......

One guy wanted a bottle of whiskey.

Another asked for a ride in the car.

Both of those requests were granted.

A few have just wanted to talk to the current owner & see photos of the car for old times sake.

Very few prior owners ask for money.

Of all those items, the only item worth any coin in my opinion is the build sheet. Since you already have one, I would offer him a 1.5 liter of Grey Goose, or the cash equivalent which is about 50 bucks. It's worth nothing to everyone else. 50 bucks is better than a pile of worthless paper.

I think a $50 bill would be sufficient for what he has. Always nice having a 2nd BS, even if it is a partial.

Worthless to anyone else, worth something to you and it was nice of the guy not to throw it away. I would be happy to flip him $100. You do have a build sheet already but I think it is nice to have another one as well, The other items are cool to keep with the car as well IMO.
If those items were for a car I owned I wouldn't want them thrown away.

Reimburse him for postage and a very nice thank you card .
These items have no value to any one else on Earth, other than the current owner of the car .Since you already have a broadcast sheet , none of the items actually increase the value of your car, money wise, but it is neat to have . He was doing the right thing by reuniting those pieces of the cars history . If he suggested monetary compensation was in order ,
I would think no more than $ 50 at the most ,would be more than fair .
Personally, if I had the stuff, I would send it to you for free , because that is where it belongs . Kind of like re uniting someone with their lost class ring or lost family photos .

iagree

on a side note:
I did the same with some paperwork of an old 69 GTX I once owned. Sold it in 1995 and found old receipts from 1969&up as well as the original bill of sale etcetc in 2009(?) in an old stash of paperwork. I conteacted the guy who bought it off me and got the name of the current owner. Tracked him down got his address and sent him the stuff in an envelope. It was worthless to me and blonged to the car IMHO. The new owner never said or wrote any "thanks" to me.

That is common.

I have mailed out over 400 records to people for cars they own so far.

Many never bother to say 'thank you', less than half actually.

I still do it because it needs to be done & I enjoy it.

I pretty much agree with what has been said. Nice to have the stuff but worthless to anyone else, maybe $50 max. Maybe a Google gift certificate.

I would ask him what he wants and if it's reasonable, pay him and if it's not, send everything back.

The information and paperwork he has does add to your car and would separate from many other cars that are out there.
Since he asked I would be inclined to agree with Sheldon and send him $100 but I would also not hesitate to give him double that and maybe some more.
I know it would bug me to not have these documents for one of my cars knowing that they existed. Money of this magnitude can easily be replaced.
If he is thinking thousands however, I would suggest he pound salt.

The 71 Charger I sold to BS27 had a huge stack of paper with it. Copies of registrations, a timeline of who owned it when etc. I even went through a library microfiche to find a tiny ad in a local newspaper when it was on a car lot in 1973. The more paper with the car the more interesting the car is IMO.

There is a whole world of people beyond the pages of Moparts that dont want the extra paperwork for their car or even know what there VIN says. I sold a Top Banana 70 Charger R/T many years ago and before he drove off I handed him photos from original owner, complete title history search, Galen stuff he shook his head and wouldnt take it from me. I told him this goes with the car and put it in his hand!
As far as the original posters previous owner asking for money Im sure hes expecting a fortune. Who asks for $50?

A car's history from new, even if a slanty, is so interesting to me.....i had a 71 gran couple two owner car....the glovebox was full of purchase stuff, build sheet, window sticker, etc....

When i replaced the carpet i saved all of the paperwork and tags i found underneath it from the assembly line and put them in the car's scrapbook too.

Some people want paid for everything, others are just glad to help others its just the way it is.

One car ive got came with about 200 pics of it throughout its life which is really nice to have but after the fact id not pay alot of ransom for info unless it was really important to the car.
