Been a while since I have logged in or posted.

Still have my Charger. Can't drive her. Effectively all cars with historical plates are banned from the road here in Greece since October 20th, 2017.

Haven't touched her but I do start her. Have a few parts show up that need to be installed. Electric headlight actuators, SS Brake lines for the entire system. Have the hydroboost 3 years now so that can be installed properly. Also purchased some powdercoated black billet hood hinges with hydraulic lift actuators. Clean up the engine bay a little.

Beyond that I am pushing forward on my house and trying to reach completion by Summer so I can move in. Looking at buying a WK series J Grand Cherokee because I need something that is allowed on the road and I can get stupid with.

Hope all is well with everyone in here

What is the purpose or reasoning behind the ban?

This can’t be! A legion of guys on here told me the goal isn’t to ban our cars! What a bummer for you.

It looks like there is a movement across Europe to ban diesel and older vehicles from certain cities.

I they make us park are old Vehicles then we all might as well start buying other things that these Tree Huggers don't like. Ban Old cars, Ban Guns, anyone want to add to the list.

Just how much money do people spend in the aftermarket on older Vehicles. Billions every year and how many people would be out of work. Now does the Date a vehicle is built keep changing up a year every year and who decided on the date in Europe that one vehicle is ok and one is not.

That sucks. What's the point of owning it if you can't do anything with it? Apparently in Greece there's an epidemic of 50 year old cars still on the road that they needed to be banned?

Read the link, cars built before 1997 and trucks before 1994. Far from being classics.

Certain types of people are registering their 1991 era BMW (or others) and they get inclusive insurance for the price of $65 a year with historical plates. A normal late model 1600cc car here pays $300/yr PLUS their own insurance rated at whatever level they want. These people drive their cars every day and ruin it for the rest of us that only choose to take our cars out every now and then.

Add in to the mix that most of these cars are poorly serviced, if at all. They are discussing to re-initiate the historic plates this Summer but in order to do so you need to pass Road Inspection which I am 100% behind and they should have been doing this all along. The 1960 Sunbeam that hasn't had it's brakes changed since the 90s and dripping oil all over the place is a road hazard. Maybe the turn signals on the 1952 Willy's Jeep are faulty and lane changing erratically. This also goes to the fact that people here get their license at whatever age they want and never have to pass an update exam along the way. They just simply have to take an eye test when they turn 70 and pass a psych exam. So bad habits get worse progressively.

If they don't change the law I have one of two options as to not let my car sit in the garage. I can get regular number plates which will cost me upwards of $2000/yr plus insurance. The other option is to send my car outside of the country and make it a point to leave the country more often and enjoy my ride, some place like...Dubai....I could store her indoors and drive her in the winter time when temps are in the 45ºF-65ºF range because let's face it, my engine would blow apart in 128ºF weather like last July that I found myself in.

For those who are so inclined and are concerned about the government pushing bans similar to these here in the States I would recommend joining an antique car club. Like the AACA or something similar. These organizations already support lobbying for the interests of car collectors and will be one of our lines of defense when we need to fight these battles here. Strength in numbers, right? I realize old car clubs aren't necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but when the time comes to fight you can be sure we'll wish we had more avenues to ensure our voices are heard.

For what it is worth...I am part of a car club called Detroit Cruisers. We are all part of a bigger organization called ELPA (Hellenic Friends of Antiques). There are probably 9,000 people in this club. There is another club CISPA and FILPA. Those car registries dwarf ours by a large amount....NONE of those heads of the clubs saw it coming. It just happened one day. I was polishing the Charger to go to a charity fundraiser for battered women and kids that friday night for a 3-day event... The call came in from my club President that anyone caught driving their car from that day forward would receive a $2000 fine and if you are driving someone else's car you also get a $2000 fine as well as the owner. We all sat home, 200 cars didn't show up. The event was a bust. One guy who owns a private museum with mainly Euro classics has about 150 he has restored and none of them can join regularity races. The Acropolis Rallye that is held every year, will have zero participants from the Old Timer generation.

It may not come next year to the US or before 2025, but it's coming.

If you were to replace the historical plates and pay the resultant higher insurance can you then drive the car?
I believe many states in the us allow historic plates that allow only parade/exhibition use and resultant lower insurance. Even those of us the maintain regular registration and collector insurance (hagerty) have use limitations. If one desires unlimited use, better get an umbrella as most insurers don't provide full coverage on older vehicles.
