I have a full mechanical advance distributor now but was thinking about trying one with vac advance for better street manners. It would also need to be compatible with an MSD 6 box. What's out there that isn't a shiny piece of junk? Did Firecore ever get the bugs worked out with theirs?

Why not use the factory electronic? That's all I've ever used with an MSD. shruggy

E-Berg has taken the new china housings and added quality guts with correct for many--curve--if you have a wild cam etc then an FBO plate in one of those makes it right on the $$ I have been using them and have been impressed with what you get for what you pay and--they come with cap and rotor so No they are not just a proform deal his site or ad tells the exact curve numbers

To me it looks like the best bet overall and I have bought a pile of them

^ thanks for posting about it, I figured E-berg wouldn't sell junk and I bought one for a low-deck 451 I'm planning to get to at some point in the future.

I've used both the Mopar electronic - recurved - and most recently an FBO, all with MSD boxes. Real happy with the FBO, more expensive than "rolling my own" but it was drop in, set initial & check total, & go. Either way, their plate is brilliant!
FWIW, WestTech (the MSD repair guys) tipped me on using the '90-'91 Ford F150 302 epoxy coils, great & inexpensive auto-parts-store upgrade.

Yes that $22 FBO plate is a Godsend (& well worth the money). I'd get a 440 electronic dist from a yard & tune it yourself (initial w vac gauge method/total 36-38 for starters/spring combo/then plug in/adj the can (if used). they have minimal wear (once points went away) but Ebergs' dist I'm sure would be a premium unit, not sure how much he wants for one tho.

This thread reminded me that I have one of those FBO disc & spring kits... somewhere. I looked for it last night, but could only find the distributor for which I'd intended to use it.

I HATE when I lose sh!t that I KNOW I should be able to locate. realmad

EDIT: Found the disc kit and the AR Engineering multi-slot phaseable reluctor I bought from GregZ at Carlisle many years ago... boogie

I might have an old factory electronic vac distrib to upgrade. What can be tuned with the vacuum advance? I heard about tightening up something in the canister to raise the vacuum required to move the arm. How can you tell which canisters can do this? Is there a way to limit the amount of vac advance and not just the amount of vacuum required? I think I had misfires from too much vac advance in the past which is why I changed to all mechanical.

most if not all of em will take a 3/32" allen wrench in the nipple for the RATE. CCW slows the rate amount from an amount of in hg to get the adv to kick in/get started & you can solder slivers of feeler gauge on either side of the arm so the notch will reach the end of its travel sooner or drill a mini hole in the arm & add a horizontle pin to limit the TOTAL. I would suggest dialing in the initial/total/springs before even plugging in the can. Rotor phasing may have been causing the issue as opposed to too much timing added from the can. A hand held vacuum pump is a good tool when working with this. I would reduce the lower shaft axial clearance to .005" (speedway mtrs has a good kit of FLAT shims for $10). check lower tang to intergear notch for rotational play (want near zero), by twisting the rotor back & forth slightly (just not enough to get into the springs) & get the NAPA Echlin MO3000 rotor with a .060" longer blade ($8.xx out the door) or drill out the rivet & make your own. get a brown or black cap with BRASS terminals.

Funny you mention the cap and the rotor blade length, since I also found a new Blue Streak cap & rotor set w/ those other parts. The cap has brass terminals, but I looked at the rotor blade and thought to myself: "Isn't that kind of short compared to what I've used before?" Guess it's not my imagination...

I'll have to see if the local NAPA folks need to special order that part #, or by some LONG SHOT actually have one in stock.
