First off, I am pretty pumped since I am inching closer to getting the engine and trans finally in my car. The car has had no engine in it since I first set eyes on it in 1980. Seems like an eternity for me to get done, but I am in the home stretch. Today I mated the engine and trans to the k-frame. A little more tricky then I envisioned as the k-frame roller frame I have is wide and hit the legs on my engine hoist. I had to spin around and re-hookup from behind to get this thing in place.

Anyway, I am missing the original trans dip stick tube (as mentioned in other thread about mystery hole I was wondering about). I have a BB trans tube, but think the 383 a-body one had a different part number.

Question: can someone post a photo of the location of their tube relative to the measurements I took? I just want to save me scratching the firewall or inner fender this coming weekend, when I hope to get this thing in place.

Thanks!

When I slid my motor under the car, like you are going to do, I removed the dipstick then reinstalled it. I believe that I had to do this because I did not have the body horizontal. It was tilted up with the rear on jack stands.

A fellow ragtop a-body.

More room there then I would imagine and to the eye appears I am good.

For sure remove the stick and tape some padding around the tube for insurance.

Off topic, seeing your engine bay reminds me I am missing the heater hose holder above the alternator.
What build date is your car and is that the original air cleaner? Mine was missing and since I have an early October build, always wondered which style I would have. That is the larger 67 style, right?. The one I have is from a donor car being parted out that was later in October and it was the smaller style used in 68.

8/27/67 SPD.. so very early.. large air cleaner was used into mid/late december anyway.. though some here and there may have been built with the smaller one.. [it was the 340 air cleaner so plentiful] i just have not seen any prior to mid/late december..mine is all numbers matching and luckily was never molested bad.. i raced it back in the early 80s when i was in high school ran 12:90's@ 105 thru manifolds.. engine is tired now from my beating on it but it still runs great.. WHAT CAR DO YOU HAVE?.. keep posting

Its a GTS convertible. White, black top and interior and red longitudinal stripe.

After engine install this weekend, the tube never hit, but it was way too close for my liking to the firewall at the point where the tube curves.
I did a little tweaking forward and gave it what I think should be enough room.

Sweet car! There are two different lengths of the tab that is welded to the tube that holds it to the trans bolt. I can't remember what the length is for the A-body's... shruggy

Ive had the motor in and out several times. Never had a problem. Of course it may of made a differance using a lift.

Might want to consider slicing off those tbs on the valve cover gasket. You’ll get leaks if you dont. Just replaced the gasket on mine.

NICE GTS RAG! great combo with red stripe.. would have been mind blowing with red int also.. iirc my dipstick has about 1/2 inch to the firewall.. don't remember strap length.. can measure it this summer when i,m at my other place.. i also have a black sport fury GT V code with orange int and stripes.. love cars with vivid color and stripes..someday it will be restored..LOL

What is the reason behind the tabs causing leaks?

Heat from the exhaust manifold. Happens with the cork, not sure about the neoprene.
