A friend dropped off 3 early, 62 - 64,auto trans for rebuild and one has part number C2408007 the numbers after PN are 0571745. My book shows it to be a 62 max wedge. I have no idea if that is correct or what it is worth. The owner is sure he got it from a 300J he parted out 20 years ago.
Thanks, Ray

Galen's book is wrong on 62 and 63 max wedge trannys. 007 is the correct number for 63 model year cars. 007 was used in the 300J along with 63 max wedge cars. the second number is not a date code either as Galen has always suggested. It is simply a continuing assembly number that is carried on year after year. the C suggests it was assembled in the second half of the 62 calendar year. a D in front of it would indicate the first half of 63. then E and F would be the 64 model year, G and H would be the 65 model year, etc. I think your tranny could very well have been out of a 300J that was likely assembled late in 62 or early 63. it would fit a lot of max wedge cars built around the same time frame. it should be worth at least 500 hundred dollars to someone trying to make a maxie as correct as possible.

Thanks for the info. All the cast date are 62 and it has a 4.2 kick down lever plus light springs in the servos and lightened governor weights like the Hemi stuff I've seen. I will clean it up, put a kit in it and see what he wants to do.

The '62 factory parts manual, 21-02-0 lists 2408007 as for a 413 Max Wedge only.

Hmmm. If the 0571 is the build date, it does decode to February 19, 1963 and a trans with late '62 casting dates would most likely be an early '63 build.

Conflicting info. confused As I've stated before, it's possible that that date codes later than the model year simply means the trans was built at a later date as a parts room replacement.

Well I had plans to work in the shop this past weekend, but things came up. I did clean the foundry dates. The owner still has a 300J and if it is for the 63 then he is hesitant about selling that is why I need to be sure what it is before letting it go.

I understand Ray , a bit of info....... That number in you pic above is the casting part number for the housing (2400066).The tail extension housing will be (2400065)

The 300J trans is #2464426 ,1963, c body for both 413 2&4bbl.

I need one so please Pm me if & when he decides to sell this one . Charlotte NC or a buddy in Cali 95073
Thanks

The last photo shows the housing was cast in Sept of 1962 so this clearly could not have been installed in any 62 at the factory. The 007 tranny’s were all installed in 63 model year cars. The parts books list the superseded part number that was available when the parts book was printed. Think about the 62 max wedge cars not being built until May/June of 1962, long after the first 62 parts books were published in 1961. Any 62 parts book that lists max wedge part numbers were probably published or updated with superseded parts pages late in 62 or early in 63. Since the original factory 62 trans which is 2400732 were no longer available, the parts books list the 63 007 unit as the then current available replacement part. The same thing then happened in the 63 parts books. It lists the part number ending in 426 as the replacement for the 63 model year as that is the part number for the 64 model year. Because 64 was the last year of the ball and trunnion, the 426 is the last listed number for the max wedge cars. So if you are restoring a car according to the parts books as Galen’s book represents, it will generally be accepted as correct. If you want your 62 to be as factory built, find a 732 trans. Good luck with that as Greg Lane and I know of only 2 cars that have their original factory automatic.

The owner told me that he will trade the trans for a set of exhaust manifolds and,or an air cleaner for a 56 D500-1 or whatever it took to get the deal done. He has a documented 56 D500-1 convertible and has everything else needed to finish the car. He also has lots of letter car projects and parts to add to the deal for the correct parts.

Well I can't help with a trade deal as I'm in Australia! And have no way of finding such parts.
A cash purchase is my only choice.??
