Does anyone know what 8 3/4 case a 340 auto car would have come with if it was a 3.23? Could it have come with a 741 case, or would it have been a 489?

Thanks in advance

pretty sure it would have been 489
741 and 742 cases were older models

I have two 1970 741 cars, behind a 318 & 383.

If you have a broadcast sheet for it, what is coded?

I don't have a broadcast sheet unfortunately, but the dates look right anyway. The car is a H1B402... vin, and the 741 gears are dated April of 1971. It looks like the small u-joint driveshaft that's in it is original.

My 71 340 Cuda with 3:23 open has a 741
Not sure if it is right or wrong yet.

My April 30 built 340 Cuda is coded for 019 Axle assembly on my build sheet which breaks down to a E body 3.23 S/G with 11 drum brakes 8.75 Rear end and a 1 7/8" Pinion and 7290 Yoke. A 1 7/8" pinion only came in 489 case.

Thanks for all of your replies. I wonder if it's possible that the sure-grip cars got the 489 case, and the open cars got the 741's?

I know that the 741 was still in use for 1970 models in addition to the 489.

There is a chart with the 1970 information at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1970/D70-3-2%20page4.jpg

My 1970 Valiant has a 3.23 741 while my 1970 Fury has a 3.23 489 & both are open with the small yoke.

Both are called out on their broadcast sheets.

Do you have a chart for 71?

My 71 340 has axle code 015 - should be a 3.23 open

I have a Nov.5 1970 SPD, build 383 1971 Cuda automatic that came with a 489 sure grip. One other in my family had a 1971 Cuda built in Dec. of 1970 that had a 489 Sure grip.

eliminating the A-body axle assemblies

1970 E-Body:
the "048" is a 741 w/2.76 ratio OPEN & 10" brakes
the "100" is a 741 w/3.23 ratio OPEN & 10" brakes
the "341" is a 741 w/3.23 ratio OPEN & 11" brakes

the "049" is a 489 w/3.23 ratio OPEN & 10" brakes
the "073" is a 489 w/3.23 ratio OPEN & 11" brakes

there are a number (for use in "axle packages") that do not have an "*" for sure-grip

anyone know what the "S" & "L" represent by the pinion diameter?

S = Small 1 3/8 = 741
L = Large 1 7/8 = 489

Another way to tell 489 is the spacer column. 489 all had collapsible spacer, not shim.

The S and L I would think it stands for stem diameter of the gears, Small or Large and refer to 1 3/4 for small and 1 7/8 large.

6bblgt is that chart for 1971 E Bodies. Looking at one 71 E Body BCS, here are some numbers under fourth line under axle 101, Line three under D axle 51.

That is the 1970 chart as mentioned above.

It appears to have been stolen & modified though........

For the record, no one has permission to take images from HH, let alone modify them. twocents

Bob,

Broadcast Sheet Axle Code 015

ALLEGEDLY, Code 015, at least as far as info I have seen to this point, indicates that for 71 E-Body with 3.23 standard axle, with 11" rear brakes and 7260 u-joints (both of which I have) shows the spec requires the 1-7/8" 489 diff. Sorry to disappoint any previously published info!!! Also, the date codes on the gearset are dead on for my car, and the diff assembly date (2/9/71) AND the ratio (3.23) are STAMPED DIRECTLY INTO THE DIFF CASE. No tag under and mounting nut.

I will also state without question that my car was 100 % untouched prior to my acquisition, as verified by conversation with the original owner, as well as my observations during disassembly.

Thanks Bill,
The info for my 014 is wrong in the white book listing it as a 3:55sg but the broadcast sheet list it as a 3:23 open

Were does 101 on the broadcast sheet of a 1971 Challenger fit into the list. There must be more to the list and this 101 could be a 8 3/4 likely open either 741 or 489 case with 10 inch drums and 276 gears.

So what is the trigger between getting a "015" vs. a "018" - my 71 340 Challenger is a 4 speed and Bill's 71 cuda 340 is an automatic yet we both have "015" ????

confused

for 1971 E-body 3.23:1 OPEN 8-3/4" rear axle - it looks like it is as simple as small block VS. big block (can't confirm where the 383 2bbl ends up?)

10" brakes = "014" (318 & 340) 741 VS. "016" (383 4bbl, 6bbl, HEMI) 489
&
