I could be in the market for some new headers. I currently have Hooker, which have some rust and some dents. Thinking about getting a new/different set.
What are you running in your '71 B-bodies?
Hows the fit?
How accessible are the plugs?
Thanks,
Jim

have hedmans on my 71 440....plugs aren't too bad - looking to go to shorty plugs though and made4you vertical looms. install was fairly easy as well - passenger side in from the top, drivers side from the bottom, buttoned with new header bolts with permatex on the ends

I was having the same concern. I decided to have my current set of Hookers ceramic coated. It was alot cheaper than new, already sure they will fit, and have been clearanced (Dinged with hammer) They look great and it only cost me $125. New Image Coatings Lino Lakes MN

I have the Summit brand on my 70 Charger. Fit was good but I did have the engine up and the steering column out when I installed them. the good thing is you can leave al your exh mani studs in. The bad is they are only 1 3/4"

What exhaust size, converter stall, and gear ratio are you running?
What headers are you running now?

TTI's in Ebody here as well, 340 904 and they fit perfect. Can change oil filter, starter and plugs easily. I can also remove the tranny without removing the headers and do not have to dent or ding to install. Pricey but worth it.

Schumacher on my 400. First rate fit and quality. I replaced a set of rusted Hedman Huslers. The Hedmans fit great, but I wanted something that would give me access to the starter without having to unbolt the exhaust.

not a 71 B body, but I just bought a brand new set of Hookers for my truck today (318) at a swap
for a price I could not resist. New as they may be they are 25+years old. and never bolted to a motor. I have some POR 15 "Factory Manifold gray" that i was thinking of coating them with. Daily driver not a show pony so looks is less important than saving them for the long haul.
Yey/nay?

Summit here on my 69 B-body.

Fit was fixed with a hammer. Starter access is ruff... but they work.

I was asked to contribute money to help solve the civil unrest in Egypt, but I suspect it's some sort of pyramid scheme.

i've heard a lot of people talk about getting out the hammer and how installing headers was such a pain...i had no problems with the install, no modifications of any kind to the headers or other parts. i believe i read that all of the headers produced for the BB mopars are virtually the same, yet so many are having problems

the only thing different that i would have liked would be the ceramic coating, but i got these off a guy who bought them for his superbee, but never installed them for half price, so couldn't go wrong

No 2 mopars are the same. Maybe yours fit because the guy who welded up the subframe was less drunk/stoned then the guy who did mine.

Would i buy another set of summit headers? For $70 bux ya. Would i expect them to fit like a $700 set of TTI's? Heck no.

My motor is a 440, soon to be rebuilt. The car is a 4-speed with 3.23 rear. I'm not sure what to do to the motor yet, but he's what I think it has now: 30 over, stage IV heads, lunatti cam, holley 750 dp and arias pistons.
I'm looking to run on pump gas and the car won't see the track. I'm trying to keep my budget down and I'm looking for suggestions. My exhaust is currently 2.5, but I plan to upgrade to 3 in the future.
Thanks,
Jim

yeah 'aint that ture "no two are the same" and even the high mighty TTi's have issues. For the price they charge that entire exhaust system should jump out of the box and install itself while you drink a cool one.

My TTI's fit perfect the first time, BUT the first thing in the instructions is to shim the engine per their specs before you begin the installation of the headers. I could afford them, not everyone can but why bash them because they are expensive. If you can't afford them there are cheaper ones, but you have to make them fit. You get what you pay for

I can afford them, who said I couldn't? I've used all kinds of headers on A and B body's, small and big blocks. I've been able to install them w/o many of the headaches people have. But then again I take my time, Jack the motor up, tilt it, remove the steering column if need be.
Shim kit??? if they are so great you'd think they make so you wouldn't need a shim kit.

check out the hedman elites. thick flanges, heavy wall tubes, ceramic coated for less than $400. IIRC they don't go under the steering, either. they're only 1 3/4", which is fine for a mildish street BB. for heads, do you mean stage VI's? for the money, you'd be better off going with edelbrocks

I originally purchased a set of Hedman Super Elites for my Charger only to find that the #6 plug would not clear the header when using edelbrock aluminum heads. Had to clearance around the starter and the PS gearbox but they look good. I ended up ordering a set of TTI which, I think most will agree are the best Mopar headers on the market. If a set of ceramichrome hedmans stike your fancy PM me and maybe we can work something out.

Why does Hedman spell their product HEDDers and everyone else calls theirs headers?

Keep old mopars alive.

Be careful with Elites, they specifically say they do not work with Edelbrocks on the listing.

I have run the regular coated Hedmans on both of my B-body's and they have been great. Better coating than Hooker and you can run the fast ratio pitman arm with Hedman's but not with TTI or Hooker. No need to spend $800 on headers for 90%street/10%strip 440.

I run 1 7/8 headers on a 440.1 3/4 will work fine and probably fit better. You won't lose much and you are not going to the track anyway.
I have always used Hooker or tti.The hedman elites are a nice 1 3/4 header.Doug's are good as well.Buy which ever one you can get the best deal on.
Try jet-hot's website. They usually have some in stock already coated for a discount.
Nice car btw!

running TTI 1 7/8 on the 383. Went in fairly eaily. Had to get the motor up and rotate the wheels (forgot to do this at first causing quite a littany of swears!) Running a Dakota starter so no real issues other than getting the wiring done was kind of a pain.

Only major problem is that the #3 plug lies RIGHT on the header and burns the wire. A shorty plug should work better with boots...add it to the list.

The old MP headers I had leaked like a sieve and could give you heat stroke when you opened the hood. Now no leaks and the engine bay is much cooler.

A lot of money but a very good product IMO.

I always bought the headman hookers summits... and they were every single one a royal pain to install, rust out in no time flat and drag on everything. On this car I was fed up and swore off ever useing headers again, then I saw BondoBob selling his used TTIs and I caved into all the hype, he gave me a good deal they showed up looking almost new, 3 years later they are the best looking thing in my engine compartment, they fit like a glove, after instaling them I stood there in amazement at how fast I had just installed a set of headers. They don't drag and I don't have to unbolt them and hold them out of the way to change a starter, as a matter of fact I don't really have to get under the car to change the starter. If you can afford them I say go for them.

Summit brand took 10 minutes to install by myself. After the engine and car were jacked up of course

Summit here on my 69 B-body.

Fit was fixed with a hammer. Starter access is ruff... but they work.

i've heard a lot of people talk about getting out the hammer and how installing headers was such a pain...i had no problems with the install, no modifications of any kind to the headers or other parts. i believe i read that all of the headers produced for the BB mopars are virtually the same, yet so many are having problems

No 2 mopars are the same. Maybe yours fit because the guy who welded up the subframe was less drunk/stoned then the guy who did mine.

Would i buy another set of summit headers? For $70 bux ya. Would i expect them to fit like a $700 set of TTI's? Heck no.

yeah 'aint that ture "no two are the same" and even the high mighty TTi's have issues. For the price they charge that entire exhaust system should jump out of the box and install itself while you drink a cool one.

I couldnt help but laugh at that one! A friend of mine had some TTI's in a 68 Charger with a 440 and he had to ding 'em to make 'em fit.

And it didnt seem like he had any better clearance at the starter than any other header that I have seen in the past.
