Rear main seal is leaking on my 07 5.9. Who else has had this problem. Costly repair?

What vehicle is it in? Going to depend on how much has to be removed to get to it. Parts are cheap, all labor. I have had lot's of LA 360's and a couple of Magnum 5.9 and a heck of a time keeping the rear main's from at least not seeping.

Its gotta be a Cummins if its a 07.

There was a former Chrysler engineer selling a modified seal on ebay for several years but havn't seen it posted recently.

Are you sure it is rear main ?? Couple of oil changes ago on my 02Cummins, I thought it was rear main, but never knew there is a rear breather, similar to the front one . . . drained the bottle and all was good !

2007 5.9, oil accumulates then leaks past the small inspection cover on the bell housing. Definitely oil, not tranny fluid. Not a major leak however its something that needs to addressed.

The valve cover is easy. 10mm bolts, 6 of them if I recall.

Well, its been awhile and I think I slowed the leak to bide some time. I added a small bottle cap of dot 3. Not a lot but after about 500 mile seems to have stopped the leak. Got a price of $900 to change it out so eventually it will have to be done.

Probably not a good idea. Now that the brake fluid has swollen the leaking rear main it has also swollen the seals that weren't leaking. Expect to have to replace all the rubber seals now including the valve stem seals. Not smart.

The Cummins uses a one piece rear main seal so the transmission has to come out.
