I can't say that I'm surprised nor do I blame them.

Marion County is in the middle of no where between Norwalk, Dragway 42 and Trails.

Back when I worked at Jegs in the late 80's early 90's Marion County had a decent pull it even had a IHRA National Event (or was it a points meet?) either way... a lot has changed since then as we all know... not to mention Norwalk was nothing it is now and the same goes for 42.

I'm just glad to hear Marion County is going to stay open. If they focus on the no prep thing they may be on to something. No prep is pulling in the crowds and cars.

Yep, they need more street and N/T, no prep.

I love to test and tune,

I love running out of people to beat also.

They have more people interested in just T & T than an actual bracket race? Not even heads up classes?

That's what I was thinking...if you know how to tune your car people wouldn't have to test so much...

Sounds like they are building a grudge race environment since that is where the action is these days.
In the past year or so, I've seen crowds at these no-prep/grudge/NT events grow like no other.
When too many rules are applied to a naturally unruly sport, something fizzles out. So in this case, the inevitable is returning as a street race mentality with safety barriers.
I could be wrong, but perhaps the bracket guys have been feeling a sense of boredom in their own backyard.

I'm just glad they're not closing. Most of the time that I go to Marion, it's to spectate or to test and tune on Friday nights.

I'm actually kind of intrigued and may go more this year to see what the changes do.

Marion is a piece of crap track but, I always have a great time and have always loved going because I have so much fun.

There is always a bunch of interesting stuff to look at on most Friday nights. You just see some weird stuff there; a lot of grass roots true hot rod type stuff. Bunch of crazy guys on bikes too that are fun to watch.

I think we'll see more tracks doing this or at least cutting back on the bracket programs. The grudge racing packs most places because it's more exciting, it's as close to street racing as you can get and stay legal.

Lets face it, the average person doesn't get bracket racing. Why didn't both cars take off at the same time? Why didn't the car that got to the finish line first win? These are just a couple of questions I've been asked about bracket racing. That's why the stands are mostly empty at bracket races.

Spectators are pure profit and if I were running a track I'd be doing whatever needed to to put a$$es in the bleachers.

Gawd I hate facecrook....love when pepole post links to it....

That said, I did go look at the tracks website to see this announcement....I guess my question is why?

Heads up classes here don't work well, but bracket racing is the biggest weekly draw....along with Nostalgic classes. What gives?

Bracket racing brings out the racers grudge and no time stuff brings in spectators. With so many tracks in close proximity why not try to exploit a niche

Those are almost the exact words I've been using for the state of sanctioned racing meets here in the UK, apart from the pro classes thats all we have and throttle stop index classes.

However, the tide is turning this year with SPR having a (back to the 80>90's) heads up Doorslammer meet in May with a total of £75000 prize money across 7 classes, shame its only a 1 off event currently....should be a live feed of it as well.

I think it's a money thing. Dollar for dollar a driver gets more passes on TnT than race days for a lot less entry fee. Track owners often have less employees and use less track prep as well as reduced operating hours. This translates into more money in the tracks pocket. Don't get me wrong I love racing and I feel that at TnT you you are limited as to the info you can learn.
We can only support those operators that let us play in their playground.

So, what about 5he average person that just wants to run their car, but doesn’t want to bracket race, or enter a class? More than half of test and tune guys are just running their car for fun, not because they need to get ready for some race.

I am a bracket racer and enjoy it but if I owned a small track I would do the same thing. These events and test n tune events drawl some nice crowds with little or zero payouts. I would have a nice pravilion and either hire a DJ or promote local bands in to get some exposure. Then I would make sure good food at semi reasonable prices were available with a limited menu. It’s hard to go head to head with tracks offering payouts ranging from 1500-100,000.00 especially on the East coast area.

I really think the operator is just trying to find a niche for the track - with three major tracks within 90 minutes of Marion - you just are facing a dwindling amount of racers to pull from - Also with the re-building of Dragway 42 into a super track- all the tracks in the area are stepping up their game to pull in the racer - Heck even Norwalk is improving their game with a whole new concrete racing surface.

Bracket day is the least crowded/busy day any track around here ever has. Nothing against it, just the way it is. No spectators come to watch and way less cars racing than on a T&T night. T&T/grudge night is always a good crowd...as well as any heads up race or grudge event.

Marion County has been doing "No Prep" for years...
I think the last few years they were having the bracket races every other weekend. Heard they do pack the place on Friday night TnT's

If there were any real interest for some bracket racing at those t&t days, they could always do a gamblers type thing.

Absolutely hate TNT nights and avoid at all cost unless I have made some major changes to the car like a new engine or suspension. There are always a lot of breakage. Usually the ricer crowd. Then you have to deal w/the idiots that try and bring their entire zip code to the starting line.

As for the no prep went and watched once. Think I was the only guy not packing. Yeah wont attend again. I go to race have fun and BS in between rounds w/friends. Not try and avoid fights. While there may be a larger crowd I wouldn't call it a good crowd.
