I've got some pistons that are caked heavily in carbon, is there anything good I can soak them in to soften things up instead of jumping straight to scraping?

Scrap the heavy stuff. Solvent or 2+2 + scotchbrite to finish. Good oven cleaner might work well. Never tried it though.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

berrymans B12 carb spray will literally melt it right off. It is way better and faster than anything else you can get right now. DOn't get the dumbed down California version, B12-C.

I'll try giving some of the odds and ends a try. I've got an obsolete 2-stroke engine apart on my desk and the ring grooves weren't bad at all but the underside of the piston is just caked in carbon.
