I have a house built in 1989 with an aluminum sliding door in the master bedroom with a pane in need of replacement. I could get all of the glass replaced with low E glass and keep the existing aluminum frame or I could get an all new vinyl door with low E glass for just a little more.

So far I've been reading that vinyl doors do a better job than aluminum of keeping heat and noise out. The door is facing south and gets blasted by the sun all day and the room does tend to heat up. Also we live pretty close to a busy two lane road.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Vinyl is worth the money, you’ll be happy you did. We live in a mid century modern home, which is more than half glass. We replaced all aluminum windows with vinyl, it was well worth the money.

Vinyl is better in everything but looks.

The previous owner of our house replaced all the windows and doors with high quality vinyl windows and doors. They are awesome...but dear God...they are so ugly!

I have the original aluminum framed windows in my house that was build in 1954. During this time of year, even on the inside, it appears that I have ice framed windows. They're not drafty at all, they just literally freeze into blocks of ice. The ambient temperature of the frames can be felt if you stand close. I do really like them though and doubt that I will change them anytime soon.

My energy assessment just recently came from my power company; my house is more efficient than the top tier of efficient homes that are the same size. A blower door test has also been done and I'm real close to having too tight of a house so; with the insulation and everything else, I'm doing really well. In my case, changing the windows might cause other problems if the house cannot breath. Something to think about if all other aspects of your house such as insulation, door seals and ext. are up to par.

There are more than one style of vinyl windows and doors AND they're available in virtually any color. You just bought a house from someone with bad taste is all !

Interesting. Vinyl seems to be the popular choice here. Note that most higher end doors and windows are aluminum clad. My builder and supplier both recommended against vinyl for swing and slider patio doors. shruggy

Today's vinyl is probably better than 30 year old aluminum. Although my older house (20 yr) has aluminum clad Pella and they are still pretty nice.

In your location I'd recommend looking at Milgard Tuscany Vinyl with suncoat low e2 glass - they have a manuf plant in temecula.
I recently went through this on our previous home, it made such a difference on noise and heat/cool transfer that we plan to upgrade our current vinyl windows on our new place.

When we bought this house it came with new vinyl windows and our old rental had blown aluminum double pane windows. Old house was noisy and drafty, new house is very quiet and warm, they make a huge difference and it's almost twice the square footage and heating bill is cheaper and they both have/had forced air electric furnaces. They claim fiberglass is even better and there are big differences between high quality well built versions and the cheap ones most buiders use. Go to the Window Dog site and read up as they have lots of info on who makes the best windows nationwide. There are many local makers plus manufacturers that make cheap windows for anyone to slap their name on.
Ours have a lifetime warranty and they will honor it provided we can find the closing papers and things to prove we bought the house after the new windows were installed when they rehabbed it as we have one that appears to be blown. L
