The 8 1/2 year old NAPA battery in my Cuda died this winter. I don't want to spend big bucks for a Special Supertrick SpiralWound Drycell Promod Battery. I am thinking $80-$100 for a plain old fashioned lead acid 800+ CCA Battery. Who still makes a good one.

Do I care about Name Brands or should I be looking at who actually manufactured it like Johnson Controls or Exide? AutoZone sells one made by Johnson Controls. Any good?

Buy a battery made by East Penn (Deka),made in Pennsylvania. Try to get the right size to fill up the tray. If you buy a group size 24 (Deka) you will get one with a sealed top and you will not get any gassing on the top of the battery and it will be fairly leak resistant. It will still be flooded wet cell but will eliminate any corrosion or leaking issues. Try and stay between 650 and 800 cca's (0 degree rating)in a group 24 case, it will deliver long lasting trouble free power. High cca batteries (900-1000) tend to be acid starved because of the amount of plates in the battery. They also do not hold up as well in applications where the car sits alot. Remember these ratings are at 0 degrees the higher the temperature the better the battery will perform, so unless you have 16 to 1 compression you don't need 1000 cca batteries. East Penn makes alot of batteries for alot of companies and they put someone elses name on them so you just need to ask your supplier who makes their batteries. The Deka part# you should look for is 624MF (650 cca's at 0 degrees, 820 ca at 32 degrees) or the 724MF (725 cca's at 0 and 890 ca at 32) Hope this will help.

If you want a basic battery for a good price Costco's "Kirkland Signature" are not bad. I replaced one that was 7 years (still cranked, I was just bored) and I have another still in use at 5 or 6 years.
