Local guy has this kinda rare 1970 Challenger RT for sale. Says it's matching numbers and has a nice build sheet. Decent driver quality paint that's showing its age, but no rust. Ideas on its value? Not many U-Code, 4-speed, Dana cars changing hands.
Lots of RED!

Don't know it's value, but the placement of the T/A rear spoiler is off by a mile. Back edge of spoiler should line up with back edge of the decklid.

Need more pics. Engine and undercarriage especially. Looks like engine bay was repainted, that leads me to believe the car wasn't cared for real well as some point???

Also, the interior pic-- pad on parking brake is gone, knob on window crank is gone, these are incredibly easy to correct details that the owner didn't feel the need to address...what more-difficult issues are there???

Now I see the second set of pics. 318 Stroker is right on the spoiler--placement is WAY off. That would really bother me if I owned the car.

Overall not bad for a lightly modded engine bay. If I was selling it, my bottom price would be right around $50k

What's he asking? $60? More?

Nice, but the correct white bumble bee stripe would look a lot better then the incorrectly mounted T/A spoiler.

Great car...a red explosion! I concur, remove spoiler and put white bb stripe on it.....do not paint or 'restore' it.....i see that car bringing big bucks..$40-50k

Guy is Asking $39k. Putting the stripe on should cover the holes drilled into the deck lid.

Seeems like a unique car in it options & color combo.

That would be a good buy @ 35K which isn't far from his asking.

Everything in the trunk has been painted. So the car has been painted at least once. Not enough detail in the under hood shot, but I am guessing everything is covered there too. I would check the body over carefully. With that little care in the paint, who knows what else was shoddily painted.

If it is a nice sheetmetal car I think it would be a very satisfying car to work out all the fugly touches and turn it into a really sharp car. Price doesn't seem out of line.

Don't know what the underside looks like, and trunk, but if it's not a perfume pig/bondo bucket, I'd say $35k is decent.

Why must EVERYONE put those valve covers on? Ditto the air cleaner.

Sometimes endpoints help with pricing and setting comps.

Less that a 440-6 auto in above avg color combo

More than 383 4 speed in above avg color combo

drool I like it (-spoiler + V9W) & price seems reasonable

it will never be a 440 six pack car (& those prices aren't that strong) & unlike 'cudas the 440 4bbl Challenger R/Ts outnumber 440 3x2bbls

What's the doohickey above the side marker on the drivers side fender?

Looks decent. As stated above, if not a bondo bucket and metal replacement was done well 35K seems like a deal. Lot of red though!

If the numbers check out, and mostly original sheet metal with minimal bondo, I would buy the car, then remove the spoiler, braze the holes and install the white bee stripe. Fix the other easy stuff, slap on a set of 15x7 rallyes, THEN drop THE HAMMER until the tires melt! Boo-YHAA!!!

I'm with everyone else I think. A neat car that isn't too far fuglied up yet. $35k seems fair and allows you to spend $5k fixing stuff. It's a $40k-$45k car in nicer shape I think.

Geez - you guys are tough.

IF (big if) it's a #'s matching 70 Chally w/440, 4spd, good tag, good sheet in desirable color combo even in driver condition I'd love to get that car into my garage for less than $40k

Where else are you guys seeing cars like this for this price?

That's enough asking money to warrant a good lookover. That one pic of drivers open door area shows some poss. recent cover ups/overspray etc.

Overspray?

Look at the gas filler tube. That should tell you tons.

If you are looking for a driver you're right.

I couldn't stand it the way it is. The spoiler would have to go and the deckled would need to be replaced meaning the car would need to be repainted.

Enjoy rolling down the window in your "gas n go" - if that's busted, something that takes 30 seconds to replace, think of all the other things that are probably Mickey Mouse

Deal has been struck. Car was actually much nicer than what I was led to believe. The guy was an older gent, and was taking care "of a few things" before letter her girl go like new heater core and spraying the kick panels. Except for a couple of eraserhead sized bubbles at the very bottom edge of one quarter, the rest of the body is exceptional with all original sheet metal. Also all matching numbers and a clean build sheet. Correct hemi radiator (just recored) and new exhaust. He also has the original valve covers and air clearer, but not original carb. New seat covers and Just Dashes dash pad.
All in all, a very nice #2 driver with LOTS OF RED!

I also checked the position of the spoiler holes and they easily fall within where a bee stripe would be, so no repaint of the deck lid would be necessary.

How could someone put a spoiler on in a way off location? Maybe he liked it that way?
My second car in 1974 was a red on red 70 Challenger R/T with the white stripe on deck and a chrome luggage rack. I sort of liked the rack, but sort of did not like it either.
Mine was a 383 auto with AC.
Oh, I smashed the rear quarter and got it fixed and then later skid sideways off interstate 10 at 50 mph in the rain hit a parked truck and totaled mine out.
Had mine about 8 months.
Nice ride you got.

Cool car: I would fix a few minor things and drive it a lot. Hopefully a stock mirror will cover those other mounting holes okay.

Nice car. I like it a lot. I can't wait to see it with that white bumblebee.

Congratulations!

congratulations.

I think you got a good deal.

As mentioned before I would fix some small cosmetical things and than simply have fun with it.

I enjoy my drivers way more than the showpoodles in my collection.

Aside from the stripe and the mirror, about the only other thing I would immediately do are the door panels. They are faded and cracked and look like crap. Been awhile since I bought a set of e-body panels, and after checking a few sources, I see they jumped in price.
Even with a Year One discount, they are $480 delivered just for the fronts!
Yikes!!!
Last set I bought were $325 IIRC.

Congrats to you. Like said before, fix a few cosmetic things and drive and enjoy the car.
That's what I plan to do as soon as the weather warms up a bit.

Here is the build sheet. Confirmed. Red on Red on Red. Definitely needs a stripe to offset all that RED!

V08 too.

Likely because the black bee stripe was recommended with red.

Paint - trim - vinyl edit waiver.

When the order came in, they would have contacted the client to make sure it is what they wanted.

Does the door sticker indicate 12-69 or 1-70?

I looked at the door decal to check the VIN, but I don't recall the date and I won't be taking delivery until next week.
Should there be something different going on between Dec 69 and Jan 70?

Probably December - your car is 4000 VIN numbers before my FC7 V code automatic Challenger and it's December

It is common for cars to be built earlier or later than hoped for.

The Mylar door sticker with show the actual completion month & year.

I could relocate the spoiler and add a window crank for way less than 30k.....I'm not GYC.

Repaint whole car? Why? Some people would restore the Mona Lisa??

And when people have thrown buckets of cheap paint on it (red or otherwise) they fixed it.

But actually doesn't seem like the paint was as bad as some clues eluded to. Sounds like a car you're not parionod to drive.

But got to be careful if you choose to put over $5-10K in it.

Yes & no.

V9W is the painted bumblee stripe in white. See the tag & BC shown above)

V6W is vinyl side stripes in white.

Looks like a great score, congrats!

The shifter boot would have to be corrected if it were mine.

The car will look great with 15" rally wheels, but I would be tempted to try a set of painted steel wheels and polyglas tires even though it's already red overload I have a feeling it will be the best tire wheel combo for it.

Yes Barry. I know there are not built in numerical order by VIN. However this car gas a SPD 5 days before mine so I think it's pretty safe to say it got built in December.

Mona Lisa has been PRESERVED. Some hacks in the past have tried their hands at filling in scratches and such. It is worth 1B now...wow. I think an X-Ray revealed that it was painted OVER another pic...because canvas was expensive back in those days.....

Fix the cigarette lighter & it's the new Bluesmobile.............

To me, ANY original E-Body with a red interior is a rarity & VERY desirable! I really like this car & think you got a great deal on it for under 40k. U-Codes are pretty rare, & pretty hot.

Here you go - how sharp is this? (this car was a 440-6 & black interior, but you get the idea)

Too bad the rear tail stripes just won't work on the new Challengers.

An earlier poster mentioned that the car came with 15" Rallye wheels based on the build sheet. The sheet shows W21 which represents Rallye Wheel option but doesn't denote if its 14" or 15". How can you tell from the build sheet if the wheels are 14s or 15s?

Tire size & type.

U82 on line 2.

E60x15 Goodyear Polyglas GT RWL

W34 also, no need for the space saver saver with a 14" wheel car.

The red/red rolling bordello described above???

Not so much...

It looks good.

But I call the 3 color rule. It's got white black and red on the outside. 3 is one too many colors seen on the outside.

IMHO, would look better with white top and white or red interior.

That was me.

I noticed that the tire code started with a U which means 15" tires. That lead me to look at the wheel code of W21 which is the rallye wheel

I TWICE had the opportunity to buy a red on red Hemi Challenger 4 speed that was stripe delete and a red 450 wheel car. Man that was a lot of red.

Got it. Thanks. Bummer that the 15x7 rallyes are long gone. Gent said he had the car for 10 year, and the road wheels were on the car when he bought it.
Anyone got a good set of 390s that they want to part with?

Go to Carlisle. I have seen complete 15x7 wheels and tires sold at OK prices.

Actually drive it.....and do massive burnouts....listen to the other gold chains who drive late model stuff talking about what they have back home in the garage in a dehumidified bubble.

Mod tops have one pattern over the entire top.

I don't think multiple color are horrible. Just when top and stripe match it's more visually pleasing.

V21 challenger with black hood and white stripe just don't flow as well. White and black are considered neutral. But you don't often see a cream painted car with red painted top and green stripe.

The factory suggested color combinations set by the factory stylists take in account 1) interior and 2) exterior colors for 3) stripe choices. It also considers 3 colors for 2-tone combinations making sure at the very least one exterior color matches the interior color.
