I raced one of the correct ones for 10 years, a front engine dragster, engine where it's supposed to be. Now I've got an altered, still open wheel.

You'd have serious trouble trying to go that slow in a FED...
Our close family friends had a 12.0 71 Chevelle, with an iron headed 355, and .540 lift solid cam. They put the motor with no changes into a 99 210' RED and it goes 9.50...
11.48 @ 120 with a 1.80 60' 318, stock 1.88 heads, stock 904, Pump Gas, 13 lbs of boost.
9.94 @ 134, 318 on pump gas, 14 lbs w/ Eddies, transbrake 727, 3600 lbs, 3.54 gear and 28's.

It doesn't take much to go 10 seconds flat or better. 20 years ago I sorted my very old digger with a high mileage (100,000 plus), low compression 440 that sported a few add ons. I had a used Comp .501 cam, Holly SD intake, 850 DP Holley, Stahl 2" headers, stock 727 with a Chetah VB and factory 2400 stall conveter. Without a transbrake I had to drive the car from a standing start because the rear brakes wouldn't hold it. A low 10 at 120-129 mph was easy. A transbrake would have been in the nines. A sharp 12 second street motor would be easy low to mid nines.
The picture of the digger is from 1992 or 1993 at Milan.

old 225" S&W hardtail, 4.10 9", glide stock 1.76, 451 with home ported edelbrock heads, ross flat tops around 11:1 cr, comp shelf .585/.585-275°/275° flat tappet, manley sportsmaster rods, 1.5 HS rockers, M1 single 4 intake, holley HP 950 on gasoline. runs 8.20s a little over 160. if i can ever get the time and ambition to finish the new car that's a 240" BOS double slip which is getting a 557" KB with B1 heads. if it doesn't run 7.50s or better there's something wrong with it.

Gotta question for the guys that have been there. Say you like the old FED look, but don't have the budget to go full tilt. Heck, don't even want to go through major licensing and certification. Just a fun, low maintenance car. So the thought is a FED with alky induction (not as much cooling worries), probably a toilet. Either a glide or a TF. To run 10.0s consistantly, what motor? A BB would probably be too much power and weight. A nice small block with E heads (weight, good flow and reasonable price). What kind of valvetrain and lower end would you suggest? Gotta wonder if a stock 360 would do it....
Well, my pal Ron has a old 60's front engine with a 360 cast crank, summit basic rebuild kit, cast aeroheads and a hughes hydraulic cam like .550 lift and a performer rpm dual plane in front of 727 and the car goes 10.30s shifting at a mind numbing 5500 rpms
There is at least 2 tenthes left in that car but he just doesnt want to go any faster (insert chicken smiley)

That's what I'm talkin' about! Something that requires draining the alky, occasional oil changes, checking the brakes, fluids and all the fasteners every couple months, and the rest of the time just run it. So long as it had good brakes and was safe, you could let your GF run it.

Count me in! Old school FED. 96 ich wheelbase. quarter eliphtic front suspension. Mild steel chassis 1 5/8" as per NHRA /IHRA rulebooks. Solid narrowed 8 3/4 with 3.91s 225 slant six overbored to 246 cubes. mild hydraulic street grind. Severly ported head. Windage tray. 904 trans with MP ecno converter. Made everything. Front axle, chassis, shifter, steering wheel, engine is my build from another project. Intake manifold is 6 snowmobile carbs on a homebrew intake. No chrome since for me das ist verboten. Car is an absolute ball to drive and cost was low. It was fun to build too. I call it the Sr Dragster. Cause old guys need fun too. It worked perfect first pass. This year i want to put in a race grind cam and perhaps more converter . I think with careful flogging I can get it solidly in the elevens.Time will tell. In the meantime it draws a crowd and is giving this old gray haired guy some very enjoyable moments. It even made it on TV2 weeks ago. (Gearz TV Speed)There is something about setting your parementers and sticking to them and then just working step by step to see what you can wring out of your combo that i find very satisfying. Don

Count me in...started with a front engine 135" 340 powered slingshot in 1984...went to a old rear engine hardtail in 1989...due to structural cracks found in that car in 1996 we installed a new cage and front halved it sold that car in 1998 and built a brand new 225" S&W... won the Texas Raceway S/P Championship in 2002 and finished 2nd in Q32 the same year...that car went 4.80's at 139 with a 499" low deck stroker, and a Ron's flying toilet...in 2005 went to a little track I'd never been to before (Lubbock)...wasn't ready for the bumps on the top end...went through the traps...on my first time trial...upside down...at 150...in late 2005 bought the current car 2004 S&W 235" 4 link...because I put the wrong convertor in for a 4 link car it has only been a 5.07 at 135....but I have a new bullet on the engine stand and the right convertor ready to go in...might have it ready to go by mid summer...

Us too, We have a 4-link Racetech with a 499. Last year it ran a 8.01 @ 164mph with 12.0 comp., Pocket ported SR's, .684 Comp roller, -2, 1050,and 4.10's. Over the Winter I installed max ported -1's, 3X, 1150, 1.6 rockers and raised comp. to 13.0. I'm hoping for 7.80's @ 170. Will find out next weekend.
