I am planning a new CM cage in my '66 Charger based on a S&W kit. Everything looks pretty good except for the forward "j" bars that protrude through the firewall and connect to the a-pillar down bars. What perplexes me is how to keep the a-pillar bars out of the windshield yet still place them so they can intersect the j-bars. It almost appears that I'd be better off installing the bar outside of the inner fender well.

What says the fabricator crowd?

My 1965 Dart ( back half SFI certed to 7.5) done by Forest on here is the same way on that bar except for supporting the front coil over shocks for the A arm CAP coil over front suspension up
Most of the older Mopar NHRA SS are done that way also shruggy
Your more than welcome to stop by and look at it

Here's mine. I hole sawed through the A-pillar for access. Then welded the cutout back in.

Thank you everyone! I was thinking the bars needed to go outside the rails. There is a support under the upper shock mount. I'm thinking I can remove it and be okay with just a 1 5/8" bar. Doug and Jerico did you guys remove yours?

I'm thinking if the bar is high enough I'll be okay on tire clearance. I'd like to avoid putting the front suspension back together until all of the fab is done.

Advice for anyone working on old car floors : If possible have everything sandblasted! Welding on old tar-embedded pans sucks!

Off I go to hackity hack

In the 1st pic you can see where mine is tied into the shock tower. Nothing was removed , just radiused to fit and then welded to the bar.

Right on, I will just scallop the brace to accept the tube and it should be okay. Again, no tire clearance issues? My looooooooooooong gravel driveway can be unforgiving if the road maintenance dept (me) get behind.

I am running 15x3.5's on the front. Might go to 4" as I am nit sure if the Weld 2.0's are that or 3.5.

Jeff, Cab, Doug, etc. thanks for the good pictures. This is my first solo cage and I'm a little wishy-washy with my vision.

A buddy stopped in, took on look and said "put the welder away, seam seal that beotch up, get the cage in it and let's go racing".

It feels good to be on the home stretch! It's funny how things that normally make a person crazy (i.e. 1/4 glass install, etc.) are appealing jobs after having to make all of your parts for a stretch. Looking forward to some bolt-together projects. I've been working on my car/truck projects from 4-6 am and about 8-12pm every day I possible for about 9 months. With work, a baby and my Mopar habit it's been kinda rough but we are racing this summer no matter what.

Just when I though my mind was made up...

Mark do you have any pictures of the a-pillar bars or dash bar. This really helps to compare a 66-67 b body considering that all of the years have different dashboards, etc.

How are plug changes with the bars on the inside of a 66/67 b body?
Mine aren't easy with indy heads and TTI headers now on our 66 or our 67 coronet. Not awful but not easy. One of our cars has them on the outside like others have posted. One doesn't have them at all.
