I have an 07 2500 with a popped 5.7. I found a complete but rough 03 2500 with a good running 5.7. I’m thinking this should work as a replacemt as they’re both non MDS(but I have to change over the valvecovers/coils). Just making sure I’m not missing something like a difference in a reluctor wheel etc

03 is a time bomb unless it has already been fixed. They were known for breaking the valve springs, dropping the valve and destroying the piston and cylinder wall. Just a heads up.

The truck has 330K kms (200K miles) and the engine was supposedly rebuilt at 150K kms (90K miles). It runs extremely well and has absolutely no hemi tick. If it hasn’t blown up yet I’m doubtful it will at this point. I’m probably going to use the whole motor/trans/transfer case

Valve springs are easy and cheap to replace and can be done without pulling the heads, they typically start breaking around 100,000-150,000 miles and just because someone somewhere rebuilt the engine does not mean they were replaced then if they were not broken yet. The only time I have seen seats fall out is if they fell out when the engine overheated. Rods can randomly break on 03-08 hemis and I have seen them go between 90,000 and 300,000 without breaking, seems totally random. I have a bucket of broken rods and bearings mostly look brand new.

I hear you, but when we’re dealing with old miled out vehicles like this you have to take a leap of faith. I’ll probably do valve springs and a timing chain while it’s out.

I took that leap a few months back... 14 miles later I had a rod knock. I highly recommend checking all the bearings.
