I'm driving my sisters car out there for her. But is there anything cool on the route? It is I-80 all the way out there. I'm going to hit up some Lincoln Highway stuff I hope, the random train stuff. But it looks like a lot of nothing. Any cool cars hanging around? Iowa? Nebraska? Wyoming?

Salt Lake, train stuff? Then you have to go out just north of Brigham and see:

https://www.nps.gov/gosp/index.htm

Lot's more there to see now then there was at my first visit in 1962.

Who is Reed in Kearney?

I have Pioneer Village, Speedway Museum, Kunk Motorsports hopefully, steam locomotive in Geneva, NE, Ames Monument, etc...

Anyone know anything about a certain car in North Platte, NE let me know.

Probably, he runs the Race Car Registry and has had several S&M cars. He used to come here a while back.

if you adventure a little off I80 you can see the very scenic sand hills in nebraska---and the browns park/hole in the wall from sundance and butch cassidy near green river wyoming----and there is the flaming gorge reservoir too......

There is a car collection/museum also near Kearney.

Just north of Omaha, NE is Blair, NE, home of Woodhouse (truck mountain is worth the drive).

Woodhouse is a large Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership with a Ford store as well across the street. Both sides of the highway feature a large stock of trucks "built in" to the hills. Terraces hold hundreds of new trucks.

Omaha features several Woodhouse locations including Maserati and Alfa Romeo, if you want to check out a new 4C or Maserati. smile

I80 Truck Stop in IA is fun as well, has a vintage Power Wagon inside.

Once you get into NE, though...not much to see for a long, long time. frown

Good luck!

Coming back east from Reno to Chi. area years ago, and the sign at west end of I-80 showed 507 miles IIRC, to Iowa. That's a long state....

SLC is too far away or I would suggest a cool junkyard at the bottom/middle part of Idaho. So big you can't see it all in one day.

Leave I-80 for I-76 into Denver. Take I-70 through Colorado into Utah. Historic mining towns, rising elevation, Eisenhower Tunnel, ski towns, Glenwood Canyon, Canyonlands, the Swell...there are some pretty scenic areas on this route.

In Utah, take Highway 191 for continued lunar landscape of Utah's canyonlands, Highway 89 for some wandering farmland with small towns, or Highway 50 north to hook up with I-15.

I-80 through Wyoming, not much there to see along there except wind and the occasional gust of wind, although sometimes it gets a bit windy.

I wish I could head through Denver, just too far out of my way, and with the weather I am not going to chance getting stuck.

Lots of cool things I learned going to different websites on the Lincoln Highway. So it should be alright as long as the weather holds out.

there are lots of illinois people here in colorado---ill. leads all states in visits to rocky mtn national park----they have the largest elk herd in the states---elk actually wander the streets of estes park----my family came from illinois and there are plenty of witness protection people here too---but they can be a little stand-off-ish----just teasing about witness protection....

SLC via Denver is only 135 miles longer than I-80 direct, so a couple extra hours.

Weather is the big variable for either route. I-80 can get severe wind whipped blizzards up until the March time frame. I-70 can get snow until June. Wyoming does a pretty good job at keeping 80 open, but if you in the middle of it when a storm whips up, you may be staying at Bob's motel and gun shop in Bumbleweed WY. I-70 has multiple mountain passes, but is a primary conduit for Colorado skiers so tends to be very well maintained, but once you get into UT, gets very, very sparsely populated and again puts you in a position of very small town motels, if they even have one.

Be safe, whichever way you go.

Looking through a bunch of Lincoln Highway websites, found some cool stuff. Tons of train stuff, especially out west. A few car museums and neat barn finds through Nebraska.

It shouldn't be that bad, as long as the weather holds out.

Got home Saturday night and just about slept until this morning. It was quite the adventure. I didn't get to check out every single spot, but I hit up a good majority of them! Thank you for the suggestions.

Here are all the pictures, that I can show, from the trip.

How do you get so many good photos from in your vehicle? Some of them even appear to be while moving and they are still very focused.

I've got a newer Sony Mirrorless camera, and have the settings in a way to allow superfast shutter for instances like that. Unfortunately sometimes it would focus on the dirt on the window.

I love I can get stuff like this while driving over a bridge. It isn't the best, but you can see the Vintage Fleet Locomotives and train cars at the Union Pacific shops in Cheyenne, including an original Chicago & Northwestern F-unit diesel that used to run not far from my house!

That is where the Big Boy is being restored, and of course the one in the Challenger on the bridge... whistling
