Coming back east from Reno to Chi. area years ago, and the sign at west end of I-80 showed 507 miles IIRC, to Iowa. That's a long state....

SLC is too far away or I would suggest a cool junkyard at the bottom/middle part of Idaho. So big you can't see it all in one day.

Leave I-80 for I-76 into Denver. Take I-70 through Colorado into Utah. Historic mining towns, rising elevation, Eisenhower Tunnel, ski towns, Glenwood Canyon, Canyonlands, the Swell...there are some pretty scenic areas on this route.

In Utah, take Highway 191 for continued lunar landscape of Utah's canyonlands, Highway 89 for some wandering farmland with small towns, or Highway 50 north to hook up with I-15.

I-80 through Wyoming, not much there to see along there except wind and the occasional gust of wind, although sometimes it gets a bit windy.

I wish I could head through Denver, just too far out of my way, and with the weather I am not going to chance getting stuck.

Lots of cool things I learned going to different websites on the Lincoln Highway. So it should be alright as long as the weather holds out.

there are lots of illinois people here in colorado---ill. leads all states in visits to rocky mtn national park----they have the largest elk herd in the states---elk actually wander the streets of estes park----my family came from illinois and there are plenty of witness protection people here too---but they can be a little stand-off-ish----just teasing about witness protection....

SLC via Denver is only 135 miles longer than I-80 direct, so a couple extra hours.

Weather is the big variable for either route. I-80 can get severe wind whipped blizzards up until the March time frame. I-70 can get snow until June. Wyoming does a pretty good job at keeping 80 open, but if you in the middle of it when a storm whips up, you may be staying at Bob's motel and gun shop in Bumbleweed WY. I-70 has multiple mountain passes, but is a primary conduit for Colorado skiers so tends to be very well maintained, but once you get into UT, gets very, very sparsely populated and again puts you in a position of very small town motels, if they even have one.

Be safe, whichever way you go.

Lived in Cheyenne for many years. Still a fun cowboy town in a lot of ways. A nice place to stop and gas up and get a sasparilla...

Looking through a bunch of Lincoln Highway websites, found some cool stuff. Tons of train stuff, especially out west. A few car museums and neat barn finds through Nebraska.

It shouldn't be that bad, as long as the weather holds out.

I work at the dealer where I-80 and I-15 intersect, if you are going to be in town a few days I can send you to see some car graveyards
