Now set to go at 3:45 EST. most powerful rocket since the Saturn V!!!

27 engines. Elon gives it a 50/50 chance of failure!

All seems like a publicity stunt. It's carrying a Tesla roadster------yeh, that makes sense.

I'm betting on failure. Wonder what this costing taxpayers.

Pretty much all first flights of a new rocket will carry a dummy load. Most of the time it's something boring like a chunk of metal.

Spacex is paying for range services, so taxpayers are making money right now, lol.

Well...they've already successfully resupplied the ISS so I don't have much reason to doubt Musk's 50/50 estimate.

A Tesla roadster is probably a reasonable way of initially testing payload capabilities. 3,000 pounds and no great loss if the thing explodes. Plus, it's publicity.

I just watched. And the boosters just landed and they are waiting to head about the 1st stage if it landed on the drone ship.

Amazing

The landing of the boosters! I would have never thought possible in my lifetime. They even landed simultaneously.

I was watching and thinking "no way this s**t's real!" It looked like one of those NASA animations that demonstrate a future project.

This almost a "where were you when" moment for me. Always been into this stuff.

5 million pounds of thrust (Saturn V was 7.5 million), 27 engines. Gotta figure this is a platform that can evolve into many different mission requirements.

It's a good day to be Elon Musk.

Any news on the third core yet? The way I see it, it could be at the bottom of the ocean right now and everyone at SpaceX would still deserve an "attaboy."

I tried to get my 4 year old to watch it (like she's watched other launches), but she wasn't interested today.

Other than the core landing, the next test is whether the second stage can relight after a 6 hour coast period. This will be their longest coast yet. The question is whether the kerosene will jell/freeze before then.

Other rockets have a cryogenic upper stage (liquid hydrogen & LOX), so the fuel is already cold enough that it can't really get any colder and freeze.

Historically, no news on the ASDS landing means it isn't upright frown There are some people who would point to that as an entire mission failure realcrazy laugh2

One of the great things I love about living here is I have watched every space shuttle launch and every other launch from the KSC right from my back yard. I could feel the power and the rumble as the ground shook on the first space shuttle launch. Awesome day both then and now.

Very happy for him. I do not believe in teslas, private rockets and the like, but when you meet him and watch his style he makes you believe the impossible. I can't explain it but my first impression was he is a winner no doubt. For the record I did not invest in any of it and knew I was wrong.

that was 100% cool. My dad worked on all the boosters at Michoud assembly plant. until Apollo 11 in 1969. That was the killer as they finally did it. At one point, he was transferred to Huntsville, Alabama.
After that, soon after, the funding ran out. After that, I remember friends of dads driving taxi cabs. To make ends meet till they found work. Some were engineers and other highly-educated guys.
As far as useless payloads
Every real launch had metal recovered from, the capsule/payload.
So they added a small amount of that to other metals. And made coins. So dad and others were given the commemorative coins. My brother has them all. They say on the something like contains
actual flown metal
Here is a shot of my older brother and me at Huntsville as kids.

Yep. It ran out of the special fluid they use to (re)start the engines, so only one of the engines lit up for the landing burn, instead of three.

It hit the water 300' away at 300mph, spraying it with shrapnel, taking out two thrusters on the barge, and I guess potentially taking out some of the transmitters. (The barge has thrusters on each corner for station keeping)

Hopefully we'll have footage from onboard once they retrieve the cameras.

I'm assuming everyone has seen this video... I believe it's been downsized a little since then. Now it's ~30' in diameter. realcrazy laugh2

I had this thought too. If you look at the photos of the Tesla Roadster floating in outer space, you almost have to think he got the idea straight from the opening sequence of Heavy Metal. It looks almost identical.

The whole thing was incredible! SpaceX deserves all the praise they get for pulling off such an unbelieveable feat. It probably went better than anyone could have imagined. And watching those two rockets land side by side was surreal and something that I would have said was impossible not long ago.

Not at all OK with it and you are 100% correct about that, and it continues to this day....a yearly guaranteed market for connected defense contractors.

As for colonizing space, space travel and the like....never gonna happen people...it is stuff of dreams and fantasy...people like Musk capitalize on this to fatten their wallets even more, usually with free dollars, get their names out there, and their egos stroked. We can't even colonize Detroit.......much less Mars.

Cool acomplishment but... you cant deliver cars to customers who have paid for them but you can deliver one into outerspace? Seems like a good use of money to me... NOT! How bout get out of the rocket buisness till you deliver the cars you already got money for and blew past the timeline you promised or quit promising cars you can't deliver(on earth).

Good Point....because it was/is never about the cars....it is raping the taxpayers wallet and getting your mug on tv. billionaires all have plenty of $$$$, so they compete for notoriety and to appear on the news (see narcissism).

Well, they are separate companies, so I'm pretty sure they can continue working in parallel. The car in question was the first model they produced years ago, not a model 3.

Model 3 production is continuing to increase. We all know that work tends to fill the time allotted, so missing tight deadlines can sometimes still be faster than meeting loose deadlines. The M3 was moved up by a couple years, so they're still ahead of that original timeline.

I'm surprised there haven't been complaints here of how the Falcon Heavy flew 5 years later than they initially thought. laugh2

Yup, just like Spain wasting funds to send Columbus to the Americas. And then others coming here to settle and live.

Nice try, fail though. Spain coughed up money to make money and boy did they. looted and enslaved all of south and central America and portions of north America too.

Now that I think about, good analog to Musk.

I've been given feelings and opinions. Not facts, like the one quoted below.

Ok, but the music sucks. We'd much rather listen to the rockets.
