This almost a "where were you when" moment for me. Always been into this stuff.

5 million pounds of thrust (Saturn V was 7.5 million), 27 engines. Gotta figure this is a platform that can evolve into many different mission requirements.

It's a good day to be Elon Musk.

I was watching and thinking "no way this s**t's real!" It looked like one of those NASA animations that demonstrate a future project.

I had the EXACT same thought...no way, this is animated.

Any news on the third core yet? The way I see it, it could be at the bottom of the ocean right now and everyone at SpaceX would still deserve an "attaboy."

I tried to get my 4 year old to watch it (like she's watched other launches), but she wasn't interested today.

Other than the core landing, the next test is whether the second stage can relight after a 6 hour coast period. This will be their longest coast yet. The question is whether the kerosene will jell/freeze before then.

Other rockets have a cryogenic upper stage (liquid hydrogen & LOX), so the fuel is already cold enough that it can't really get any colder and freeze.

Historically, no news on the ASDS landing means it isn't upright frown There are some people who would point to that as an entire mission failure realcrazy laugh2

One of the great things I love about living here is I have watched every space shuttle launch and every other launch from the KSC right from my back yard. I could feel the power and the rumble as the ground shook on the first space shuttle launch. Awesome day both then and now.

Very happy for him. I do not believe in teslas, private rockets and the like, but when you meet him and watch his style he makes you believe the impossible. I can't explain it but my first impression was he is a winner no doubt. For the record I did not invest in any of it and knew I was wrong.

that was 100% cool. My dad worked on all the boosters at Michoud assembly plant. until Apollo 11 in 1969. That was the killer as they finally did it. At one point, he was transferred to Huntsville, Alabama.
After that, soon after, the funding ran out. After that, I remember friends of dads driving taxi cabs. To make ends meet till they found work. Some were engineers and other highly-educated guys.
As far as useless payloads
Every real launch had metal recovered from, the capsule/payload.
So they added a small amount of that to other metals. And made coins. So dad and others were given the commemorative coins. My brother has them all. They say on the something like contains
actual flown metal
Here is a shot of my older brother and me at Huntsville as kids.

Yep. It ran out of the special fluid they use to (re)start the engines, so only one of the engines lit up for the landing burn, instead of three.

It hit the water 300' away at 300mph, spraying it with shrapnel, taking out two thrusters on the barge, and I guess potentially taking out some of the transmitters. (The barge has thrusters on each corner for station keeping)

Hopefully we'll have footage from onboard once they retrieve the cameras.

I'm assuming everyone has seen this video... I believe it's been downsized a little since then. Now it's ~30' in diameter. realcrazy laugh2

If anyone has technical questions about launches in general, I'd be happy to try to answer them.
