I think it would be awesome in a jeep, I am not sure I would swap one into a full sized truck though. I hope this trend continues and they release something a bit bigger. Hopefully the 5.0L v8 or the 3.8L I4

Awesome. That engine in a 70's Dart or 90's Dakota with a ax15 trans and I got torque and fuel mileage.

161 HP 267 TQ ck

I can buy a real nice 318 5 speed magnum dakota for $3000-$4000 and get more HP and TQ and with the $5000 or so dollars I save I can buy a whole lot of fuel. If you are talking already having the truck and doing the conversion with a blown up motor consider that you can buy a 5.2 or 5.9 for around $500 and $500 labor for the install and you are still saving $8000 without the added expense of a motor swap.

I think that engine is more targeted to forklifts and such that get used a lot.

It is fun to daydream about but the price makes it completly impracticle.

Yeah, I'd be looking for a 50mpg VW donor car and do your swap if diesel really is a must.

Otherwise, just chuck a turbo on whatever POS engine you have in there now and spend the 6 grand you just saved on fuel. Less work involved too.

I just don't know how many times I've said it, maybe it wasn't loud enough.

I LIKE DIESELS! laugh2

Not playing with gasoline engines anymore. In fact I'm seriously looking at converting the race car or selling it and just playing with my 12 valve 1st gen.

ME TOO!

In fact I bought a 5-speed stripper 90 12V w/ a service body to play with. No air, crank windows, etc. It's getting an intercooled 12V and we scored a NV4500 for it. It's a 4.10 truck too.

That said I'm not giving up my gas stuff. Too many Fords coming together and I need to go lay the smack down this summer lol.

I think Jeep repowers are their target market. Cummins engineers were working with Fred Williams from Dirt Every Day while they were building their TJ.

I wonder if Cummins will make public a BSFC graph for the new 2.8 I4?
In the past Cummins was one of the few engine manufacturers willing to publish those.

There are a number of now very cheap
1994-1995 OBD-I 2nd Gen Ram 2wd pickups
with the uninspiring 3.9V6/manual powertrain.

With a 2.8 I4 Cummins repower such a shortbed Ram might be able to get
Over 30 MPG at a steady 70 mph
on a level nearly windless blacktop Interstate.
On a BSFC graph the
“island of best fuel economy”
would need to be about 0.3 lbs/hp-hr or lower to get there.

In many states the OBD-I vehicles are no longer emissions tested.

My old 92 6bt ex cab long bed auto got nearly 30MPG, I bet a 4bt in a 1/2 ton regular cab short box would do it pretty easily.

As for the 2.8 this thread is about, I bet it would sell at an incredible pace if it was mechanically fueled instead of all the electronic garbage, thats one good reason for a diesel is they were very simple and self contained.

I wonder what exhaust emissions level the Repower Crate 2.8 I6 diesel is tuned for?

Perhaps if it is for old Jeep repowers
or for off road use,
it might be pre-1994 Tier 1 level where fuel economy was not hobbled by NOx

As of this writing, Cummins has not released prices or sales structure (where to buy), but we would guess the R2.8 package will retail between $8,000 and $10,000 and will be sold through the current Cummins dealers. The biggest unknown currently is the California Air Resource Board, which is reviewing the Cummins application for an Executive Order (EO) number designating what year vehicles the engine can be used in for a legal emissions-compliant swap. Last fall, Cummins demonstrated a 25 percent reduction in CO2 emissions and lower hydrocarbon emissions too in the R2.8 as compared to the 4.0L. Cummins wants to offer the R2.8 as a 50-state-legal crate engine, even if it means only in certain older vehicles. We will have an update soon if and when CARB makes a decision.

End quote

NOx is not mentioned.
The 25% CO2 reduction is also a sign the fuel economy will be “about” that much improved over the gasoline 4L I6

from the cummins repower website:

The Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel (PN 5467036) has demonstrated through the testing procedures prescribed in 40 CFR Part 86 to meet EPA’s Tier 0 (LDT 1 and 2) and Tier 1 emissions standards (LDT 2 weighing less than 4000 lb complete weight). This means that the R2.8 generally is suitable for Model Year 1999 or earlier light duty trucks.

Thank you for digging and finding that.

Tier 1 prior to 1999 covers a lot of inexpensive used light duty trucks.

Looking at the prices of todays pickups, the need for urea emissions fluid, plus the Tier 2+ fuel economy hit... I think I would prefer to buy a $3000 used truck from a low rust section of the country, put $5000 to $8000 into fixing it up, and another $10,000 putting this engine in it.

Comparing that cost to the $40,000+ price of today’s new pickups
with their scads of questionable durability electronics,
it seems like a better value.

Unfortunately the 25% better fuel economy over gasoline gets partially eaten up by the higher cost of ULSD fuel.

I wonder if a chip maker like Bullydog or similar could make that 267 ft-lbs of max torque climb to +300 ?

Oh I'm sure they can.

Personally I would stab this engine into a '92-'99 Dakota.

The 1st Gen Dakotas are maybe 700 lbs lighter?
Also seems like 1st Gens could be had with an 8 ft long bed?

A 2.8 diesel in a light Dakota certainly would be interesting,
kinda like the diesel Mazda pickups of long ago.
