I think with exhaust manifolds,a single exhaust of a large O.D. would be sufficient and probably help low end power. Headpipes into a 3" collector,a good muffler, and a 3" or maybe even 2.5" tailpipe. I had a mild cammed (.427/.454 lift)318 in my '77 Powerwagon,Performer intake and Holley 4bbl.I had duals for a while but went to single when they rotted away.Low end was much better,it had 3.55 gears and I revved the heck out of it.

My thoughts, (probably already said somewhere in this post !) Convert it to Standard electronic ignition. 4 bbl. Drop a moderate perf cam in it (something like 220/230 degrees at 0.050” lift) and matching springs. If you like the roller cam save it and the roller tappets for a later date (you can regrind the cam to your own specs). Headers and duals or open exhaust. Check axle ratio. If its one of those insanely high 2.2X gears - junk it. Install a Ford Explorer axle in it. These come in all sorts of gear ratios check the website: Ranger station. The axle width will be perfect - it uses 4.5 inch bolt circle and you can upgrade to disc brakes if you like, and they are super cheap and plentiful in the boneyard. I bought a 4.11 limited slip explorer (8.8 axle) for $150 from the boneyard, it was already pulled, no scrumming around to get it out. You will need to fab a new driveshaft. Have fun !

Dual exhaust , a Holley 500 cfm 2bbl carb and maybe a better electronic ignition should get you in the high 15's in the quarter mile.

Whatever dual plane 4 barrel intake you can lay your hands on stock or otherwise. With no head work there is no need to get carried away with big induction or big anything else for that matter.

MP performance or reworked mechanical advance distributor with an appropriate curve in it.

Did the 5.9 magnum have a roller that is compatible with the 318 valve train? If it's bigger than the 5.2 cam, it should be cheap and better. If not that then a reground OEM cam.

Swap meet headers and dual exhaust.

A B-body 8.75 can be coaxed into the existing spring spacing or maybe an 8.25 with a SG for cheap. 3.55 max.

904 (998?) trans with the low gearset and if Dwayne's dyno sheet is any indication, a good converter (3800-4000?).

Throw all the chassis tricks in the book at it to help the little engine that could hurl it out of the hole and if all else fails, blue bottle in the trunk.

Fwiw on the gearing, 90mph/26.5" tire/4.10 gears, no converter slip = 4660rpm.

3.55's put it at just over 4000.

I can't imagine the converter would slip more than about 3-5%.

4.10's isn't a lot of gear when you're running under 100mph in the 1/4.

I have a stock rebuilt 85 roller 318/833od/323gears in my 47 desoto. It has/had a 600 Holley, wieand stealth intake, block hugger headers, 2.25 dual exhaust/xpipe, magnum heads and a reground(bullet) LA roller cam with .436 lift. It seems to be out of steam very early in the rpm’s, like 4500. I think the stock cam would be the major set back to any combo. I know roller cams are pricey but I would stick with the roller setup and get an after market cam.
