I actually have a pair of them, so I wondering if they were used in pairs. Also notice the cotter pin that is located at the bolt head end and what purpose would that severe?

cotter pin keeps it from falling out of the square hole---i would vote for the tire hold-down....

Usually they have more threads than 2".
I'm going with the spare hold down crowd.

True on the 2". I can't get the quick pin on the other side for the trunk??? Aren't those usually just a "J" bolt?

You might be right at that. I have had the pair for sometime and I have know idea where I got them from. There a chance that it might not even a automotive part... The threads are 5/16"
