I have a1999 dodge 1500 4x4 that I want to switch the original 5.2 out to install a 1995 5.9 My question is is the flywheel the same size/tooth? I know the 5.2 is neutral balance and the 5.9 is weighted/drilled. The transmission is a nv3500 5speed and I want to install the correct flywheel using the 5.9 with the 3500. It is my understanding that 5.9's used a larger transmission but I want to keep the 3500. Any information/flywheel numbers would be appreciated-Thanks

If you plan on using the same trans then yes, the flywheel will be the same size. Rockauto is showing both flywheels to be 143 teeth and sells a replacement flywheel for the 5.9 for under a $100.

The 5.9L Magnum needs an offset balance. The factory never made the 5.9L Magnum combination with an NV3500.

The flywheel elmor recommends will only physically fit. It will be neutral balance.

The flywheel you need was never made. I've mated this combo before. I brought a B&M 5.9L Magnum flexplate for an automatic transmission to a machine shop. They copied the offset balance onto a 5.2L neutral balance flywheel.

I do not see a listing for the B&M auto flexplate for 1992 and newer 5.9L listed. They may not make it anymore.

Wrong

Go look at the listing for the 5.2 and the 5.9, then look at the pictures, then look at the part numbers, then compare the physical specifications.

Except for the imbalance in the 5.9 flywheel (see pic) the specs are the same as the 5.2, however, they are different part numbers, because of the imbalance.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

This flywheel is what you want:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/zzz-50-2754/overview/make/dodge

I'm running this exact part # in my 88 dodge with a 2001 5.9 magnum with all the original MPFI. While it is chinese and there are other manufacturers, this part number will fit a 95 5.9 so that you use a 99 nv3500. There is only 1 flywheel for a 5.9 magnum and only one for a 5.2 magnum from 92-02.

That said, I think the 5.2 is scalloped and thats a whole other bucket of worms.

Brewer's makes bolt-on external weights so you can use the original 318 flywheel.

How would you figure out where to put the weight, does it include instructions? I need to do this to a 130 tooth wheel.

Thanks guys! I think I will pass on the bolt on weights. Murphy's law applies to me! I certainly appreciate all the replies and suggestions!!!!

The flywheel that you listed from Summit is the exact same flywheel listed at Rockauto, only it's way more expensive from Summit. It's even the same part number. I had thought about using the weight kit, but in my mind, it's just one more thing that could come loose and fly off. Do you friend a favor and get the flywheel from Rockauto.

Sorry I did not fully read the reply. Since the factory never offered the 5.9L Magnum balance for a NV3500 I didn't know it existed from the aftermarket.

BTW a 10.5 will not work.

So in 1995 a Magnum 5.9 V8 (Z vin no.) light duty was offered in a 2500 Ram, as well as a rarer Magnum 5.9V8 Heavy Duty, both auto and 4500 manual trans.

There are four engines and three balances.
318 and 5.2 Mag both internally balanced, neutral balance flywheel.
360 is externally balanced, diagram in MP books. It has the largest amount of imbalance.

5.9 Mag is externally balanced, not as much as the 360.

The Mopar crank has one offset hole in the crank flange so the wheel only goes on one way. The offset weights also have the six hole flange with one offset hole and only go on one way. Not foolproof, but nearly impossible to screw up.

Chevy racers have been using the offset weights for SB400 cranks for decades and they don't "fly off" They have also sandwiched weighted flexplates between crank and flywheel to accomplish same thing.

Let your wallet decide, not your fear.

R.

I have a 2000 5.9L with stock EFI flywheel bolted up to a NV3500. No problem using the factory 5.9L piece.
