I have heard that some or most brands of headers
don't clear the angled spark plugs on the Eddy heads. I dont' want to buy ceramic coated headers and the have to beat on them.
Is there an alternative to the TTI headers.
I will be putting these on my 68 RR with a B block. Most likely 1 7/8 " tubes with power steering.
Any suggestions?

1&7/8 Hooker competition works, but needs two small dings (nothing drastic-around 1/4" to 3/8" deep) on two tubes for socket clearance.

2" Hooker Super Competition needs one ding on #1, and that's it. Pics below. I had them coated after test fit.

That looks great!
Are you using the 2" on a 451 ci.?
Perhaps I should rethink the diameter I will use.
Is your 451 a pump gas engine?
I am trying to decide which stroker kit to buy for my 400 block.
Thanks,
Mark

well I wish I had that much luch with my hooker 1 7/8th in 69 roadrunner with eddy heads, I too had to dent the two pipes for clearance but then found (after cermaic coating them ) that they hit my power steering pump when installed ,so I had to grind down the side boss and raised writing on the power steering pump to clear plus dent the side of one pipe.
Next problem is that the pressure line from power steering fitting is very close to one pipe with only 1/4 inch clearance ,so I am looking to switch to banjo type fitting.
Other close area is that one pipe on drivers side is only 1/4 inch away from torsion bar, so hopefully no clearance issues later but a bit worried if it will move under torque.

If you want I can post some pictures on power steering side as just working through them now.
I do not know if this is normal problems or whether I got a dud set.
regards,
Michael

Thanks for your response Michael.
Are you using the Hooker Competition or Super Competition?
This is what I was afraid of. I was really hoping to be able to buy a set ceramic coated and put them on, rather than have to send them out for the coating after clearencing them.
The pictures would be great!
Thanks again,
Mark

I swapped to manual steering to avoid that potential headache....Used to have 1&7/8" on the 451, swapping to 2" to see if it makes any difference. Yep it is a pump gas motor.

I've put 1&7/8 on another B body years ago with power steering and didn't have a problem, but it was a '72. Not sure if there's any difference there, always thought they were about the same. I'm thinking there's probably a tolerance stackup between the body and the headers, no two are really identical.....

Thanks for your reply Zippy.
I don't think I want to go without the power steering in this car!

I noticed that you have some impressive numbers posted. With that level of performance from a 451 ci I don't think I would need to go any bigger!

I hope you don't mind my asking but what rear end gear and converter are you using? If these are secret, I understand. I am going to use a 3.23 or 3.55 gear and I know that is going to limit my drag performance.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I am using the hooker competition headers I think 9305 might be the number.
I am using a 500cu stroker RB block and also had it decked so that does impact a little on the clearance but should not be much.

I shall take a couple pictures in the next day and post for you

regards,
Michael

I appreciate the help and info Michael.
How do you like the 500 ci motor? I am "on the fence" as to which stroker I will buy, and I need to decide very soon as the Machine shop is waiting on me now!

Thanks again,
Mark

Thanks for the compliment...'preciate that

Best run to date (in the signature) was with a 3.91 8&3/4 and tight 9" converter. I switched to a 4.10 Dana last year and lost a little bit (maybe because of the added weight), now I'm trying to make up for it somewhere else.

Just been trying to eek my way into the 10s with all the street comprimises intact....after that, will probably redo the car cosmetically.

My Dad bought one brand new, right when the 69s came in and he got a deal on it. 68 383 4 speed. Looked just like yours except it had the rocker mouldings. I was like 2 years old at the time and still remember sitting in it, playing with the shifter and beeping the horn...

Thanks for sharing part of your recipe!
I am trying to get the most out of my old car and still cruise down the highway at a good clip.

My Dad bought this car new for my Mother 7/11/68. He got a better deal on the automatic! I was 17 and he let me drive it off the lot and home that day. It still has all the original drive train except the 3rd member.

It was originally FF1 mist green and I plan on putting it back that way.

Looks like we both have had roadrunners in our lives a very long time!

Thanks,
Mark

Just installed Doug Thorlys on my 451 and like the fit and quality . Clears PS and mini starter , with Ed heads . No hammering either .
