I know back in the day it was common to tow trailers with cars, wagons. So thought it would be cool to see some vintage pictures.
Yes I know they have that crazy VW Bug and trailer on U-Tube.back in the day

Bet there was no suspension on that "toad" on the tongue. Go over the wrong bump and lift the back wheels of the car right off the ground!

In the early 90s I had a friend who's parents used a 1978 New Yorker to pull a 26' travel trailer.

No pics but it was a nice looking rig.

In our town a few years ago, there was an old man (late 60s) that had a beat to death S10 pickup. He had this little 2 wheel trailer (picture a very old Harbor Freight 4' trailer you would be concerned about hauling an old mower on) that looked about as bad as the S10. For a few months one summer I saw this guy hauling a pretty big bobcat on that little trailer! I saw him load the Bobcat on the trailer once, he put a 4x4 in front of the front truck tires, put down the ramps on the trailer, lifted the bucket as high as it would go, and drove the Bobcat onto the ramps. The ramps laid flat on the ground, the back end of the S10 came off the ground, and he lowered the bucket against the top of the S10 box, pushed it down and drove the bobcat onto the trailer as he raised the bucket. He would move the bobcat forward until the back end of the s10 dropped dramatically then backed up until the truck started lifting off the ground, then moved forward to find center. Once he was content with the Bobcat being centered, he lowered the bucket to about 4" above the pickup bed, threw 1 pretty light duty chain over the bobcat and around the trailer frame and hooked up a small chain binder. He carted that Bobcat around like that most of the summer until I didn't see the rig again. I suspect either the police finally caught up with him, or the S10 or the trailer finally gave up. I wish I could have taken pictures, it was some operation! When I saw that old man later that fall, he was driving a beat to death Chevy van. I did ask him about the Bobcat, and he told me he got rid off it because he couldn't make any money with it. Gene

I was driving through Chatsworth, Ca a few years ago and saw a guy using a 72 Challenger 340 to pull a utility trailer with lawn mowers and weed eaters, it looked like a lawn care business for him car was well worn but solid.

Only pic I have of mine towing is my sig pic.

It's 'only' a class II hitch.

Where would you get a hitch for something vintage?

Most of the time we had to make them as they were never made to do what we were doing with them

A friends car back in 1964, both the race car and the tow car were new.

No equalizing hitch, it was a white knuckle flight...

My dad bought a City of Saginaw detective car around '79, a '72 police package Torino with a 250 inline 6. When we went to put brakes on it, we had to match them up: 4 piston 3/4-ton truck fronts and 11" van rear drums. Pulled demolition derby cars all over Michigan with that and a trailer homebuilt from 50's drive-on hoist ramps with mobile home axles. Usually C-body Mopars. Took foooorrrrreeeevvvvvveeeeerrrrrr to get up to 60 mph, but would stop in a heartbeat.

Interesting that the tongue weight on the Mopar chart was only about 5% vs the more common 10%.

Muscle Mopar, that trailer looks like a Aristocrat loliner...

Wish I could contribute with pics but who knew it was a big deal back then....towed a U Haul trailer from Fort Worth to NAS Jax in 1976 with a bumper mounted trailer hitch on my 68 GTX (still own) and back when I got out in 1979...air shocks helped level the load up

I too wish I had taken pictures of some of my old car, race car, and trailer combos. We didn't even think of taking many pictures of the race cars.

I used a 66 Coronet wagon to pull the car trailer around for years. It was equipped with a factory class 3, 2" receiver hitch that was welded to the rear frame rails. The car was specifically bought to tow a camping trailer, I bought the car from the original owners and it came with all the original paper work. The hitch was rated at 3,500 lbs (which we were always exceeding). The car had a poly 318, 727, 11" drum brakes all around, and a 26" 3 core radiator with a fan schrod. Though pretty rough when I got it, I used it 4 or 5 years to pull the dirt track car to the track. The only things I added was a big trans cooler after I had the trans rebuilt and I did swap a set of 73 Duster disc brakes to the front and converted to the dual master.
I had a 72 Dodge Coronet wagon with a 400 that served the same duty for couple of years. After the 72, I went with trucks for tow vehicles.

I remember I was at the Mopar Nationals one year and a blue Superbird pulled in towing another blue Superbird on a trailer. I took a picture of that, but I'll probably never find it. Gene

For those of you who are fond of tow barring (aren't we all?), we used to transport many cars from Phoenix to Detroit area this way. I've probably driven close to 40,000 miles tow barring & never had an incident. ALMOST got pushed off the side of a cloverleaf exit in Indiana when a 454 El Camino with 800 pounds of car parts in the bed started pushing my 1968 Roadrunner. I had to quick hit the gas to pull out of it - it was pushing me into a jackknife situation. That woke me up REAL fast!

This photo was taken around 1984-5.

I've got some pictures of this somewhere but I think they are on floppy discs... Back in the '90's my wife qualified for a Pink Grand Prix with Mary Kay. We used it for a family trip to Florida from Minnesota. While in Florida I was of course looking around for cars and I found a '70 Challenger R/T 440-6 pac running project! So, I took the Pink Grand Prix and had a hitch put on, bought a car dolly and we hauled that Challenger all the way back home to MN! That 6 cyl GP actually pulled it pretty nice with no issues... Imagine, two young daughters in the back seat, wife in front and Dad (me) proudly pulling a project 440-6 pac Chall R/T in the Winter at highway speeds with a Pink car. True story!

My Red 70 Charger has evidence of once having a trailer hitch installed. I wish I could find another hitch to install. I would add it back on at some point. It would be cool to find someone with pictures of what they were towing with it.

Andrewh had a 68 Sport Fury vert with a factory tow package and a hitch poking out the back. The hitch was a ball mounted on a flat bar. It bolted to the bottom of the bumper and had runners going forward to the frame rails.

That car was some kind of heavily optioned VIP package.

Back in the 80's my girlfriend and I went on a weekend camping adventure in a tent. Due to rain storms and wind, it was a cold, wet, muddy disaster. THe next week, I went out and bought my first camper, put a weight distributing hitch and brake controller on my 442 convert, and i've never tented since. The Olds 455 had no problem tugging that camper around, but it did suck down a lot of gas. So here is my picture:

This was the set up in 1991. 440 in both cars. The Road Runner was running in the mid 12's and mid 11 on nitrous.

The New Yorker's only run was on a bad night but I have a 14.0 time slip. Pretty confident it was a mid 13 car with a lot more available on the top end. With the stiff springs and the weight of the big block. This was also a super stable tow car. Right mirror was pretty useless so I'd just flick the steering wheel to sway the trailer and that would give me a lil preview of the lane to my right.
