Well, today was the day. Still have to make some money, but the bills will be covered. It feels good to be able to walk away from a semi-toxic environment. The next adventure starts...

Jim, you got old like the rest of us.
Retirement is nice, congrats.
Next step is getting your Medicare card, when that time comes. lol
Now you got all the time to do your thing on LCA's and wander around the Fresno Pick-n-Pull.

Good luck.retired a few years ago.Seems like I have less time now than when I worked.Good thing the wife still works though as she carries our health insurance.Medicare sticks it to people that pay for decades. In a few more years we will have to go in it.Rocky

I retired back in August at 55......but since day 1 people have been all but begging me to come back to work (Electrical design/construction Engineer) so I think I'm going to try doing overseas contract work 3 months on/ 3 months off or maybe just help out some buddies 2-3 days a week with their businesses and see how that goes. I need a new car project and to stay engaged sometimes I help out at the local high school and work with the STEM students on various fun projects like converting a 73 VW beetle to Electric power. I also work out with a personal trainer and a karate instructor 3 days a week so things stay quite busy.

When bills are paid and you can live within your means and set a little something aside along the way......AND you bring-up your kids to be self-reliant these things can still be possible. The key thing is to always drive toward working because you want to and not because you feel you have to, sounds easy to say once you get there but to be honest I always had that goal and attitude most of my working career. If I had it to do all again I wouldn't change much at all about it.

Cheers to those who have succeeded and those who are on their way beer

Amen to that.

I'm 58 and have had everything paid off since I was 45.

I do. LOTS of free time. I designed it that way. Hardly any yard work, mow once a week, maybe. Weed eat couple times a year. Drag limbs twice a year, usually. 20 feet of sidewalk and 2 porches & steps to clear of snow once or twice a winter. Fish most every morning. And then have from 10 am to dark to play on Moparts. Then to bed for 7 to 8 hours, then to the lake the next morning early.

Nice to hear Jim (and thanks for hooking me up with parts over the years)!!

I retired from my military job in 2012 only to start another one in the East Bay. Once the kids are done with high school, however, then I will seriously "Retire-Retire."

Nope. Several reasons, but to start with I don't live in a high cost-of-living area so my expenses likely wouldn't change much. Plus the grandkids are in this state.

Congratulations. I retired in 2010 and LOVE not having to punch the clock in the steel mill. Looking forward to early Social Security when I turn 62 in March. I still haven't gotten to use the 15 foot fishing boat I bought myself as a retirement gift so hopefully 2018 will be the year. LOL. I did go fishing on my Friends boat late this year and caught a few 20 plus inch channel cats and bass so I'm hooked again.
